Three suspects were arrested after violently obstructing Police officers engaged in traffic duty near the 72nd milepost in Kosgoda on Sunday evening.

Police said two officers signaled to stop a cab and several motorcycles speeding from Galle towards Colombo. Among them was a suspected unregistered high‑capacity motorcycle.

During pursuit, the cab fled into Uragaha Road, obstructing a Police motorcycle, and later turned into Waturawela Road, again blocking officers and enabling the motorcycle to escape.

The cab was eventually taken into custody, but its driver resisted, threatening officers and obstructing official duty. A second individual arriving on a scooter also threatened police, while a third man joined in, acting violently and disturbing the public.

Mobile officers later arrived at the scene and arrested the cab driver along with the two others. The cab, scooter, and suspects were taken to the Kosgoda Police Station.

Police confirmed the three suspects are residents of Nanatota, Kosgoda, and said further investigations are underway into the fleeing unregistered motorcycle and the incident. (Newswire)

Police say the 23-year-old youth killed in the shooting in Kosgoda early this morning is the son of a man operating a turtle conservation centre.

According to the Police, the deceased is a resident of Duwamodara in Kosgoda and had worked as a tour guide. 

Police investigations reveal he had been shot dead while at his residence by two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle. 

The Police say a T-56 firearm had been used to carry out the shooting, while the cause of the murder is yet to be ascertained.

The suspects involved in the incident are yet to be identified. The Kosgoda Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

A failed shooting attempt was reported in the Mahainduruwa area in Kosgoda early this morning (Jan 30).

According to the Police, two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had attempted to shoot at a house, while they had also forcibly entered the house and attempted to target an individual inside. 

However, as the weapons had malfunctioned and failed to fire, no injuries, casualties, or damages to the house were reported in the incident.

The Police have found a pistol, suspected to be the weapon used in the incident, in an area close to the house. 

The Kosgoda Police has launched investigations to arrest the suspects in the attempted shooting incident. (Newswire)
