A motorcyclist arrested for assaulting another rider with a helmet in Kuliyapitiya recently has been identified as a registered criminal in Sri Lanka, the Police said. 

According to DIG W. P. J. Senadheera, who oversees Traffic Control and Road Safety, investigations revealed that the suspect is a resident of Kuliyapitiya. 

He was subjected to a drug test, during which further inquiries confirmed his criminal record.

DIG Senadheera said the suspect remains in custody, and the Police are continuing investigations into his background and involvement in the assault.

The suspect was arrested based on CCTV footage, which showed him striking another rider at the Kuliyapitiya Meegahakotuwa junction while travelling with a woman. (Newswire)

Four third-year students of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka in Kuliyapitiya have been remanded until 29th September after being presented before Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Mihil Chiranthana Sathurusinghe. 

They were arrested by the Kuliyapitiya Police in connection with an incident where a second-year student was physically assaulted during a ragging episode, resulting in injuries.

The students remanded are residents of Hettipola, Katupotha, Marakawila, and Ukuwela, and are currently enrolled in their third year at Wayamba University.

Police informed the court that the assaulted student is receiving inpatient treatment at Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital, and that a preliminary identification parade must be conducted to confirm the suspects. (Newswire)

A group of state officials, including Deputy Minister of Child and Women’s Affairs, Namal Sudarshana, today visited the school children who had been injured in the tragic accident that was reported in Kuliyapaitiya yesterday. 

The state officials visited the Kurunegala Hospital to inquire into the condition of the school children injured in the school van accident.

Two children and the van driver lost their lives in the incident, while several other children who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.

Deputy Minister Namal Sudarshana, North Western Province Governor Tissa Warnasuriya, Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne, and other government officials visited the Kurunegala Hospital to check on the well-being of the children.

Two female students injured in the accident reported in Kuliyapitiya this morning have been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.

It is reported that three other students seriously injured in the accident have been transferred to the Kurunegala Hospital. 

The remaining eight students injured in the accident are receiving treatment at the Kuliyapitiya Hospital. 

The accident occurred at Dummalasooriya in Kuliyapitiya around 07.00 am today.

A tipper truck transporting sand had collided head-on with a van transporting 15 female school children on a bridge in the area. 

The driver of the van and two children, aged 12 and 13, succumbed to injuries on the spot, while the remaining students had been admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Hospital. 

Police suspect that the accident may have occurred due to the driver of the Tipper truck having fallen asleep at the wheel.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has taken control of the Kuliyapitiya and Udubaddawa Pradeshiya Sabhas, in which the National People’s Power (NPP) had won a majority of seats in the Local Government Elections.

Two murders have been reported in the Kalutara North and Kuliyapitiya areas on Sunday, the Police said. 

A 45-year-old resident of Panapitiya, Kalutara North, was reported dead after being attacked at his house by an unknown group. 

The Police said the man had been asleep inside his house when the suspects had broken into the house and attacked him with sharp weapons.

The victim who sustained serious injuries had died after being admitted to the Kalutara Nagoda Hospital. 

The cause of the murder is yet to be ascertained, while the Kalutara North Police are conducting investigations to apprehend the suspects.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old woman was reported dead after being attacked with a sharp weapon in the Walpitagama area in Kuliyapitiya. 

According to the Police, the woman’s husband had attacked her with a mammoty during a family dispute.

A 47-year-old suspect wanted over the robberies of several three-wheelers and motorcycles has been arrested and placed under detention until tomorrow (27 Mar).

According to the Police, the suspect was arrested with 5.2 grams of ICE following a raid conducted at Kuliyapitiya Town last Thursday.

During the raid, the Police were able to recover 13 three-wheelers and 07 motorcycles that had been stolen from the Kuliyapitiya, Kurunegala, Narammala, Polgahawela, Alawwa, and Marawila Police areas.

The suspect, a resident of Narammala, was produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court, after which he was placed under detention.

Two youths from the same family were reported dead after the Jeep they were travelling in overturned into the Kumburapola Oya along the Kuliyapitiya – Hettipola main road early this morning.

The Police said as the Jeep was recovered from the river, two youths were found stuck inside the vehicle and died upon admission to the Kuliyapitiya Hospital. 

The deceased are identified as brothers aged 25 and 27 years old and residents of Kurunegala. 

Preliminary investigations suggest that as the area consists of bends, the driver may have lost control of the vehicle and overturned into the river.

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of aiding the murder of the youth who was found dead after being reported missing for several days in Kuliyapitiya recently. 

According to the Police, the suspect has been identified as the girlfriend of the murdered youth and a resident of Wassawulla, Ilukhena in Kuliyapitiya. 

Following a lengthy interrogation, the Kuliyapitiya Police arrested the woman on Sunday under charges of aiding the crime, murdering an individual, and concealing the crime.

The victim, a 31-year-old resident of Kuliyapitiya, was reported missing on April 22 and was found murdered 16 days later.

The Police found the body of the youth, burnt and abandoned, in a forest area in Madampe on May 07.

Initial investigations had revealed that the victim, who operated an eatery, had visited his girlfriend’s residence in Kuliyapitiya along with his employee after which he was reported missing.
