Colombo’s Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) has issued an urgent appeal to parents and guardians to bring five essential medical documents when bringing children for treatment or clinic visits, as the hospital experiences a sharp rise in patient admissions due to the ongoing dengue outbreak.

LRH Director Dr. Pradeep Rathnasekara said the number of children seeking treatment at the hospital has increased significantly because of the prevailing dengue situation.

He said the cooperation of parents and guardians is essential to ensure children receive prompt and efficient medical care despite the heavy patient load.

Accordingly, parents are requested to bring the following documents whenever they bring a child to the hospital for treatment or clinic appointments:

• Personal Health Number (PHN) or Barcode Card
• Child Health Development Record (CHDR) or Weight Record Book
• Drug and food allergy records
• Clinic books
• Hospital discharge cards or diagnosis cards

The hospital has requested the public’s fullest cooperation and said further information can be obtained by contacting the LRH Director’s Office on 011 2693711 (Extension 307). (Newswire)

Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children has a total of 2,712 children on its surgical waiting list, Health Deputy Minister Hansaka Wijemuni revealed in Parliament.

He revealed the figures in response to a question raised by MP Rohini Wijerathne.

Accordingly, 1,025 children are awaiting cardiothoracic surgeries, while 593 are listed for general surgery. In addition, 388 children require eye surgeries, 266 are awaiting ENT procedures, and 240 are on the list for plastic surgery.

The Deputy Minister further stated that 133 children are awaiting spinal surgeries, 48 require orthopaedic procedures, and 19 are pending neurosurgery.

As someone who has worked in the field of gastroenterology for over 15 years, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of delayed diagnosis in children with IBD. Too often, by the time these young patients reach my clinic, they are already grappling with advanced disease and its associated complications. It’s a situation that underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and early detection strategies among parents, caregivers, and healthcare providers alike.

Sri Lanka cricket National Team players visited the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) for Children this morning in order to support the ‘Little Hearts Project’ of the hospital.

During the visit, the cricketers visited the cardiology ward and cardio-thoracic ward of the hospital.

According to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the national players, coaches, and team management took part in the visit.

They were accepted by Dr. G. Wijesuriya, Director of the LRH, and Dr. Duminda Samarasinghe, Project Director of the Little Hearts Project.

The players were also briefed by the hospital authorities pertaining to the ongoing work of the ‘Little Hearts Project.’

Sri Lanka Cricket recently donated Rs. 100 million for the ‘Little Hearts Project’ of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.

Four cases of measles have been detected at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Consultant Paediatrician at the hospital Dr. Deepal Perera said. 

Speaking to the media yesterday, Dr. Perera stated that 12 children have shown symptoms of measles as of Monday (10), while four are confirmed to have contracted the disease.

“Measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. It also includes a type of rash on the body known as the Measles rash,” he explained. 

Dr. Perera further revealed that children who had failed to obtain the MMR vaccine for measles are among those with symptoms of the disease.

“The MMR vaccine is provided at 09 months and three years for children free of charge. We advise parents to obtain these vaccines for their children to ensure their health and safety,” he added. 

Dr. Deepal Perera warned that a significant increase in measles has been observed in the past few days, and urged parents to remain vigilant as it could result in severe health complications for the children. 

He also urged parents to obtain the MMR vaccine for measles without fail for their children to prevent such health complications. (NewsWire)
