A brand new Gamma Camera (nuclear imaging unit), valued at Rs. 154 million, has been installed at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH) in Colombo to enhance diagnostic services, especially for pediatric kidney diseases.

The advanced equipment, funded by the Ministry of Health, was officially integrated into medical services yesterday under the leadership of Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe.

This modern diagnostic unit replaces a 20-year-old gamma camera that frequently malfunctioned, forcing the hospital to rely on the National Hospital for critical scans during breakdowns.

Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa had earlier directed officials to expedite the installation of a new unit after hospital staff raised the need during a recent inspection visit. Following these instructions, the new system was successfully installed and made operational at LRH.

Similar gamma camera units are currently in operation at other major state hospitals, including the National Hospital in Colombo, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, and the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, significantly supporting the efficiency of patient care.

Radiologist Dr. Nayana Samarasinghe noted that the new gamma camera will provide accurate and efficient diagnostic services, improving treatment outcomes for children across the country.

LRH Director Dr. Pradeep Wijesinghe expressed special thanks to the Health Minister and the government for addressing this critical need, stating that the new technology will help deliver high-quality diagnosis and care to children nationwide.

A team of medical professionals, including specialists, doctors, and nurses, were present at the official commissioning of the new equipment. (Newswire)

A 24-hour token strike has been launched at the Outpatient Department of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo today (19).

A spokesperson of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) revealed that the token strike was launched from 8.00 a.m.

He stated that the token strike is being conducted to protest the ‘arbitrary’ and ‘unprofessional’ conduct of a female specialist doctor at the hospital.

Stating that the matter was a long-standing issue, he alleged that the Director of the hospital has failed to initiate action in this regard despite multiple complaints against the medical officer.

The GMOA spokesman further said that the matter was also raised with the Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena.

But, he too has failed to resolve the matter in seven days as promised, and nearly three weeks have passed since, he alleged.

The GMOA spokesman added that despite the 24-hour token strike underway at the Outpatient Department of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, emergency treatment will be unaffected. (NewsWire)

A donation of 11 types of essential medical supplies worth over Rs. 26 Million Sri Lankan Rupees was made to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo, by the IHRC representing the Sri Lankan Muslim Communities in Canada.

The donation of essential medical supplies was made through Zam Zam Foundation in Sri Lanka in partnership with IDRF, a Canadian NGO based in Toronto.

The director of the Hospital Dr. G. Wijesuriya accepted the donation from the Directors of IHRC, Dr. Aslam Hasana Lebbe and Mr. Rimzy Kutubdeen who attended the event held at the Hospital Auditorium in Colombo on 28th of February 2023.

Chairman of Zam Zam Foundation Mufthi Yoosuff Haniffa and Directors together with Ash-sheikh. Arkam Nooramith took part in the symbolic handover ceremony, which was attended by Medical Doctors, Nurses and other stakeholders of the hospital.

The donation was made on a request from hospital authorities due to the financial crisis in the island nation which resulted in severe shortages in medicine in public hospitals.

The donations towards the project were primarily from the Sri Lankan ex-pats in Toronto while it is noteworthy to mention that many non-Sri Lankans in Toronto also took part in this worthy cause.

The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo, which treats thousands of children annually, is the largest tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka exclusively treating and managing children from all parts of the country.

The hospital director in his remarks to the audience mentioned that the donations received from IHRC, through IDRF and Zam Zam Foundation, were sufficient for continuous critical care of children in the hospital for approximately 06 months. (NewsWire)
