Former minister Mervyn Silva and former state minister Prasanna Ranaweera have been further remanded over an illegal property sale case.

The Mahara Magistrate’s Court today further remanded the duo and three other suspects until 09 June 2025.

Mervyn Silva and Prasanna Ranaweera are remanded over allegedly selling a plot of state-owned land in Kiribathgoda to a private party by forging documents.

Former Minister Mervyn Silva was arrested by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officials while at his residence in Battaramulla in March.

The Court of Appeal has dismissed, without a hearing, the petition filed by former State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera, seeking to prevent his arrest in connection with an illegal property sale case.

A bench comprising the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohammed Laffar Tahir and Justice Priyantha Fernando dismissed the petition when it was taken up for hearing today. 

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is seeking to arrest Ranaweera over allegedly selling a plot of state-owned land in Kiribathgoda to a private party by forging documents.

The court has already issued warrants to seize the properties of Ranaweera and another suspect, both evading arrest.

The Court of Appeal has announced that it will decide on 28 April 2025, whether to proceed with former minister Prasanna Ranaweera’s petition seeking an order to prevent his arrest.

Former State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera and two others are currently absconding in connection with an illegal land sale case.

The case involves allegations that state-owned land was sold to a private party using forged documents.

Former Minister Mervyn Silva, also implicated in the case, has been arrested and remanded.
