Police have arrested the daughter and son‑in‑law of a University of Jaffna lecturer in connection with her murder.

According to police, the victim’s son lodged a complaint on Thursday (19), reporting his mother missing.

The complainant had voiced suspicion about his sister and her husband, after which the Police apprehended the couple in Trincomalee.

Investigations into the arrest led to the two suspects confessing to killing the 54‑year‑old lecturer at her residence.

Further interrogations revealed that they had disposed of the body in a thicket in Thanamkilappu, Chavakachcheri, which was later recovered by the Police.

The wife of Dr. N.D.G. Gayantha, Head of the Psychology Unit at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kelaniya, who died in a tragic accident recently, has passed away this morning (26 Mar).

According to state newspaper Dinamina, the lecturer’s wife, who had also sustained serious injuries in the accident, had been receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased, Satheesha Nilanthi, is also a university lecturer, and was 42 years old at the time of her demise. 

The accident occurred on the Central Expressway while the couple, along with their three young children, was returning from a trip to Nagadeepa in Jaffna on 19 March. 

The van they were traveling in collided with the rear of a lorry, during which Dr. N.D.G. Gayantha had passed away.

His wife, three children, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law had all sustained injuries and had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The mother-in-law and children had left the hospital after receiving treatment, while the brother-in-law had succumbed to injuries the day before. (Newswire)

A lecturer at the Kotelawala Defence University who was arrested over a statement made about four Sri Lankans with suspected links to the terrorist outfit ISIS, who were arrested in India, has been granted bail.

According to the Police, the lecturer who was arrested by officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today was granted bail by the Fort Magistrate’s Court.  

The Police said the lecturer was arrested for having allegedly made a false and controversial statement during a televised interview recently. 

His comments were about the four ISIS suspects who were apprehended in Ahmedabad last Monday, following a bomb threat uncovered by local authorities.

Indian media reported that the terror activities were reportedly targeting the city’s airport as well as the Narendra Modi Stadium, which was hosting Indian Premier League matches.

The Hindu reported that the arrested Sri Lankans were alleged members of the National Thawheed Jamaath, the organisation accused of carrying out the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
