National People’s Power (NPP) MP Najith Indika today slammed the opposition for their recent allegations regarding the establishment of power in local councils. 

Addressing the Parliament today, MP Najith Indika said that the NPP, which has won a majority of the councils, has the right to establish power in these local councils. 

“Our people have been elected to these councils. So, we have the right to establish power in these councils per the necessary legal provisions. If not, what else do we do? Bring people from home to establish power? The only option is to receive the support of other party members. How is this wrong?” he questioned. 

MP Najith Indika further said that, however, this does not mean that the NPP has made deals with other political parties. 

“We have only sought the support of single members and independent members. We have only done this in councils in which we won, securing a majority of seats,” he explained. 

The NPP MP added that allegations are being raised by opposition MPs who had previously brokered deals for their political and personal advantage. (Newswire)

The United National Party (UNP) has decided that representatives to local government bodies will be appointed solely based on the percentage of votes received by individual candidates in the 2025 Local Government Election.

The party, which secured 381 seats across the country, primarily through bonus seats under the proportional representation system, has the authority to nominate individuals to these positions. 

According to Sri Lanka’s local government electoral system, political parties can appoint either defeated candidates or nominees from their bonus lists to fill such positions.

However, the UNP has taken a policy decision to prioritize those who received the highest vote share among its candidates, regardless of whether they won or lost. 

This decision has been made by the committee appointed to handle local government appointments and was endorsed by UNP leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has instructed that the criteria must be strictly followed without exceptions.

The government’s National People’s Power (NPP) has received 4,503,930 votes (43.26%) in the 2025 Local Government Elections, securing 3927 seats across Sri Lanka. 

According to the official results, the NPP is leading in 266 local councils, which include 23 Municipal Councils, 26 Urban Councils, and 217 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) follows with 2,258,480 votes (21.69%), securing 1767 seats. The party is leading in 13 local councils, which include 02 Urban Councils and 11 Pradeshiya Sabhas. 

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has received 954,517 votes (9.17%), securing 742 seats in the election, but has failed to lead any local council.

The United National Party (UNP) has secured 381 seats by obtaining 488,406 votes (4.69%), but has also failed to lead any local council. 

The Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) has received 307,657 votes (2.96%), securing 377 seats. The party is leading in 37 councils, which include 03 Municipal Councils, 01 Urban Council, and 33 Pradeshiya Sabhas. 

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has secured 116 seats, leading in 05 local councils, which include 02 Urban Councils and 03 Pradeshiya Sabhas, while the People’s Alliance has secured 300 seats and the Sarvajana Balaya has secured  226 seats. (Newswire)

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the National People’s Power (NPP) government has been given a mandate to continue its national reform programme free of corruption.

“The NPP has achieved a clear and leading victory as a single party. This is special,” Silva said. He said the NPP is willing to join forces with independent groups to establish authorities, but will not be forming alliances with other political parties which have been rejected by voters. “As the leading party, we have the right to govern,” Silva added. 

He said the public had reaffirmed its confidence in the NPP, noting the party’s gains in the 2025 local government election.

“The NPP has won a large number of local authorities across the country,” Silva said at a media briefing, as final results were pending.

The National People’s Power (NPP) has secured the majority of votes in the 2025 Local Government Elections. 

According to the results officially released thus far, the NPP has secured a majority in 200 of the 239 Local Government Institutes. 

The NPP has secured a clear majority in 94 councils, where they can form their administration, while in the remaining councils, they will be required to obtain the support of other parties to secure a majority.

Election monitoring body, the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), says voter turnout for the 2025 Local Government Elections was not very high, remaining between 55-60%.

Issuing a statement, PAFFREL said it has received 119 complaints, of which 80 are confirmed and 39 are unconfirmed, on Election Day.

Among these, 116 complaints were in violation of election laws, including illegal election propaganda and attempts to influence the voters.

Several incidents of violation of election laws were reported from Rathgama, Kotte, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Kesbewa, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Wennappuwa, Naula, Hambantota, Pudaluoya, Colombo, Kalutara, Kuliyapitiya, Biyagama, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Madukanda, Nochchiyagama, Matara, Katana, Siyambalapitiya, Mathugama, Beruwala, Yatiyantota, and Awissawella. These incidents ranged from illegal election propaganda and transportation of voters on Election Day to influencing voters. 

There were three incidents of violence, which were reported as assaults from Norochcholai, Puttalam, and Daraniyagala. 

PAFFREL said that, nevertheless, there were no incidents or situations during the Election Day that had a significant impact on polling. 

Overall, voting processes and election day management were orderly without disruptions, PAFFREL added.

Voting for the 2025 Local Government Elections has concluded, the National Election Commission announced. 

Voting commenced at 07.00 am with the public casting their ballots at 13,759 polling stations.

The election will see representatives being elected for 339 Local Government institutions. 

It is reported that voter turnout seems to be less than that recorded during the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in 2024. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Education has announced that some state schools will remain closed on Wednesday, 07 May 2025, following the 2025 Local Government Elections.

According to the Education Ministry, all state schools are closed today (05 May) and tomorrow (06 May) in view of the 2025 Local Government Elections, scheduled for tomorrow.

The Education Ministry further said that most schools will reopen following the elections, on 07 May, while some schools will continue to remain closed.

The National Election Commission has issued a statement outlining activities that will be deemed misconduct during voting at the upcoming Local Government Elections. 

According to the Election Commission, the public has been urged to avoid taking photographs and videos of polling-related activities.

The public has also been informed to refrain from sharing photographs or videos of polling centres and marked ballots on social media. 

The Election Commission further states that using mobile phones, the possession of firearms, smoking and drinking, or entering the polling station under the influence of alcohol will be deemed misconduct.

The Sri Lanka Police has arrested a total of 08 candidates in the last 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today, ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections. 

According to the Police, five supporters have also been arrested during this period. 

The Police have also received four (04) complaints related to election violence and 15 concerning election law violations. 

The Sri Lanka Police has received a total of 568 election-related complaints from 03 March to 05 May 2025.

Among the complaints, 116 are related to election violence, and 452 are concerning election law violations. 

A total of 54 candidates and 204 supporters have been arrested, while 46 vehicles have been taken into Police custody during this period.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced that passport services will be suspended/restricted for three days in view of the 2025 Local Government Elections. 

According to the department, the 24-hour service for one-day passport issuance will be suspended on 05, 06, and 07 May.

The National Election Commission has announced the mandatory leave to be granted for private sector employees to cast their ballots in the 2025 Local Government Election.

According to the Election Commission, leave for the Local Government Election must be granted as special leave and should not impact their private leave. 

Private sector employees are to be granted ½ day leave for travel up to a distance of 40 kilometres and one day leave for a distance of 40-100 kilometres.

Leave of 1 ½ days is to be granted for travel between 100-150 kilometres, and two days for a distance above 200 kilometres.

The Election Commission states that three days’ leave could be granted on occasions where it is necessary to travel from the workplace to the polling booth and return.

The Sri Lanka Police have received 30 complaints related to the 2025 Local Government Election in the last 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today.

According to the Police, among the complaints, 09 are related to election violence and 21 are concerning election law violations. 

One candidate and seven supporters have been arrested during this period. 

Meanwhile, the Police have received a total of 398 election-related complaints from 03 March to 28 April.

The marking of postal ballots for the 2025 Local Government Elections commenced today.

Postal voting for the Local Government polls will be held on 24, 25, 28 and 29 April.

Voters can mark their postal ballots from 08.30 am to 04.15 pm on the allocated dates. 

According to the National Election Commission, over 648,000 voters are eligible to cast postal votes.
