Four suspects, including the two sons of former Minister Johnston Fernando, who were remanded over the misuse of a Lanka Sathosa lorry, have been released on bail by the Negombo High Court.

The other suspects released on bail today (31) are the former Working Director and the former Transport Manager of Lanka Sathosa. 

Johnston Fernando, his elder son Johan Fernando, his younger son Jerome Fernando, and the other two former state officials were arrested and remanded in connection with an investigation conducted by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) regarding the misuse of a lorry belonging to Lanka Sathosa. 

It was alleged that the vehicle was used for operations linked to an ethanol company reportedly owned by Fernando, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs. 2.5 million to the state. (Newswire)

Investigations are underway into a third lorry suspected to contain narcotics, Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said. 

Speaking to Newswire, ASP Wootler said the third lorry has also been found in Tangalle and that an inspection is currently being carried out by the Police. 

He further said that previously, 10 kilos of ICE, a lorry and a motorcycle were recovered from within the premises of a house in Seenimodara in Tangalle, where two bodies were found. 

The Police Spokesman revealed that another lorry was later found near a service station in Tangalle containing 200 kilos of ICE and Heroin, 05 revolvers and one T-56 firearm. 

ASP Wootler said that one suspect has been arrested so far, while measures are underway to arrest another suspect.

He added that further investigations are ongoing into the incidents. (Newswire)

The Police have recovered 04 revolvers from the lorry from which approximately 200 kilos of narcotics were found in Tangalle today. 

According to Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler, approximately 200 kilos of narcotics, consisting of ICE and heroin, were found in a lorry that had been parked near a house in Seenimodara in Tangalle. 

The Police had earlier recovered two bodies, presumed to have died under suspicious circumstances, from the house. 

The Police said an individual who had been hospitalised due to alleged poisoning had died while receiving treatment, after which his child revealed that he had been drinking with other individuals in a house in Seenimodara.

Upon inspection of the house, the Police had found two more bodies in the house, alongside a stock of narcotics. 

Preliminary investigations into the incident reveal that the stock of narcotics found near the bodies is suspected to be ICE. (Newswire)

The Panadura District Traffic Division reports that a driver was taken into custody along with a small lorry for transporting 39 coffins in an unsafe manner.

The vehicle and driver reportedly belong to a company that manufactures coffins, located in the Keselwatta area in Panadura.

The lorry, which was dangerously transporting the 39 coffins from Panadura towards Kalutara yesterday (28), was stopped and inspected by the Police in the Wadduwa area and subsequently taken into custody.

Two suspects have been apprehended in the area between Paranthan and Elephant Pass in Kilinochcho for transporting 400.4 kilos of Kerala cannabis in a lorry.

The suspects were arrested last night during a raid conducted by Kilinochchi Police, based on a tip-off from Miltary Intelligence. 

The arrested suspects are aged between 34 and 40 years and are residents of Kilinochchi.

The stock of cannabis had been found packed in 182 parcels that had been concealed inside the lorry.

Four persons were reported dead after the lorry they were travelling in overturned in Badulla today.

According to media reports, three other persons who were also travelling in the lorry had sustained injuries and were admitted to the Badulla Hospital.

The accident is said to have taken place near the Walihida area along the Badulla – Soranathota Road at around 12.00 this afternoon.

At least 26 people have been injured in a collision between a bus and a lorry in the Irattakulam area in the Madampe area on the Chilaw – Colombo Main Road this morning.

According to the Police, the injured persons have been admitted to the Chillaw Hospital.

A private bus plying from Devala Junction to Chillaw had collided with a lorry transporting cement, which had also been travelling in the same direction.

The driver of a lorry wanted over the death of an 83-year-old man, who he had abandoned following a collision with the lorry, has been arrested by the Pugoda Police, it was reported.

The lorry driver is reported to have knocked down the senior citizen in the Dangalle area in Pugoda on Saturday after which he had taken the man with him under the pretext of taking him for treatment.

However, CCTV footage shows the suspect abandoning the senior citizen with his injuries a few meters away from the incident of the accident.

The Police said the 83-year-old man had succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

The Pugoda Police launched an investigation in search of the suspect after which he was arrested in Pannipitiya along with the lorry.

The suspect has been remanded until December 14 after being produced before the Pugoda Magistrate’s Court. (NewsWire)
