Cabinet approval has been granted to continue with the government programme to provide relief to low-income families in 2024 as well.

In the first half of 2023, the government took steps to provide 10 kilos of nadu rice per family for a period of two months covering 2.74 million families in the 25 districts, including Samurdhi beneficiaries.

In order to help maintain the nutritional level of the identified low-income earners, it has been found that it is advisable to implement the same program this year as well. 

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the President to provide 10 kgs of rice per family per month for a period of two months covering about 2.74 million low-income families.

As per the proposal, low-income families are to be identified through district secretaries/Government Agents by involving small and medium-scale mill owners. (NewsWire)

The Cabinet has approved the suspension of rental for apartments rented to nearly 50,000 low–income families under the urban housing programmes and to provide legitimate ownership of housing units. 

According to the government, the decision has been taken on par with one of the budget proposals tabled by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies.

To suspend rental for apartments rented out for low–income families under the urban housing programmes, necessary measures should be taken to grant the legitimate ownership of those housing units to those residing in them.

Under various housing programmes, the Urban Development Authority, the National Housing Development Authority and the Urban Civilization Development Authority have provided houses on a lease, instalment–wise ownership, sole ownership and rental to low–income generating families, it added. 

Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Urban Development and Housing to stop charging rental from all the urban housing units provided on a low monthly rental basis of Rs. 3,000/- or less to low-income generators.

As per the Cabinet approval, the necessary steps are also to be taken to transfer the sole ownership of those housing units to those low-income generators, which is nearly 50,000 low-income families. (NewsWire)
