Police have arrested five suspects aged 16 and 17 in connection with the assault of a youth near a Dansala in Malabe town on Poson Poya Day (29).

The arrests were made yesterday following a complaint lodged with the Malabe Police regarding a video circulating on social media that showed the youth being attacked with helmets, kicked, and punched. 

The suspects, residents of Kotalawala, Pattiyawatte Road, were taken into custody the same day.

Preliminary investigations revealed the incident stemmed from a dispute in a queue at a rice Dansala.

The victim had asked two individuals attempting to cut into the line to move to the end, which escalated into a violent confrontation.

The arrested suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today (01). 

The Malabe Police said further investigations are underway to apprehend additional individuals involved in the assault. (Newswire)

A student from a boys’ school in Malabe has been praised for his honesty after returning a bag containing a large sum of cash that he had mistakenly picked up.

According to the school principal, the boy reported the matter along with the vice principal, stating that he had gotten off a bus carrying the wrong bag, which contained bundles of cash. 

Upon inspection, the school authorities found the money and a bank passbook inside, after which the bag was sealed.

The bank was informed, and the owner of the passbook later contacted the school. 

A man arrived to collect the parcel, but the principal said the matter was referred to the Malabe Police to ensure the rightful owner receives it.

“This student has done an extraordinary thing. If the parcel had been found by someone else, we doubt the owner would have gotten it back,” the principal remarked.

The bag containing cash and the student’s school bag were later exchanged at the Malabe Police Station. (Newswire)

The Police were prompted to shoot at a car in Malabe after the vehicle had failed to heed their orders to stop, leading to the seizure of over 02 kilos of Cannabis. 

According to the Police, a couple had been arrested during the incident reported in the Hokandara area in Malabe last night.

During a raid conducted in the area, the Police had instructed the vehicle to stop for inspection, but the driver had failed to heed the order and had instead driven in reverse, prompting a Police officer to shoot at the tyres.

Following the shooting, the vehicle had crashed into a utility pole and had stopped.

Inspection of the vehicle by the Police officers found 01.8 kilos of cannabis hidden under the driver’s seat.  

Further interrogation of the suspects had led to the officers finding another kilo of cannabis from the suspect’s residence. 

The arrested suspects are a 30-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, both residents of the Delgoda area in the Gampaha District. (Newswire)

Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof has instructed Police to implement special security measures along the Chandrika Kumaratunga Mawatha, running from Malabe to Ambathale, Lankadeepa newspaper reported.

In response to complaints of frequent robberies, including vehicle thefts, the Governor had convened a meeting with police to increase the number of patrols, secure entry points, and install CCTV cameras along the route.

Setting up police posts, improving street lighting, and establishing continuous surveillance in the area, had also been discussed.

Discussions had also focused on the potential transfer of the area, currently under the Urban Development Authority, to the jurisdiction of the Mulleriyawa and Malabe local councils for better administrative oversight. (Newswire)
