The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today ordered that the driver involved in the fatal road accident in Mattakkuliya, which claimed three lives, be remanded until September 30.

The suspect, a 52‑year‑old resident of Mattakkuliya, was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this morning (17), following which the order was issued.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver had been under the influence of cannabis at the time of the accident.

Police said the vehicle, travelling at high speed from Wattala, went out of control and crashed into three three‑wheelers and four motorcycles near Ferguson Junction in Mattakkuliya on Wednesday night.

The collision left 13 people injured and hospitalized, while three victims succumbed to their injuries. (Newswire)

The body of a youth has been recovered in Mattakuliya, the Police Media Division confirmed. 

According to the Police, the body was found in a waterway near a temple in the area. 

The Police further said that the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained.

The Police Media Division added that media reports claiming that the youth was kidnapped and murdered are unverified. (Newswire)

A 50-year-old man has been arrested on charges of soliciting a bribe of Rs. 100,000 per month with the Acting OIC of the Mattakkuliya Police Station. 

The Police said the suspect had reached the Acting OIC via telephone and had offered Rs. 100,000 per month in exchange for allowing drug peddling in the area.

Having informed the Bribery Commission in this regard, the Acting OIC summoned the suspect to the Police Station under the guise of agreeing to his request.

Bribery Commission officials nabbed the suspect when offering Rs. 50,000 as an initial payment to the Mattakuliya Acting OIC.
