Work has commenced to implement the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a four‑storied Medical Ward Complex at the District General Hospital, Mullaitivu, with grant assistance of Rs. 600 million from the Government of India.

The MoU was signed and exchanged by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Health W.K. Wickremasinghe, during the visit of India’s Vice President Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan to Sri Lanka from April 19–20, 2026.

According to the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, the project envisages civil construction of a modern four‑storied ward complex equipped with essential infrastructure, including installation of lifts, air conditioning, fire protection systems, generators, UPS facilities, and piped medical gas supply.

The Indian High Commission states the new complex is designed to combat premature mortality due to non‑communicable diseases (NCDs) by increasing screening rates for people over 35 years of age and reducing referrals to other hospitals. Upon completion, the hospital’s bed occupancy rate is expected to rise by more than 150%, significantly strengthening healthcare delivery in the district.

The initiative is being carried out under the bilateral High Impact Community Development Project framework, through which 18 people‑centric grant projects are currently underway across 25 districts of Sri Lanka. These projects span housing, health, education, fisheries, transport, renewable energy, livelihood sustenance, and agriculture, creating tangible improvements in daily life. (Newswire)
