Milk powder importers and wheat flour companies today (23) assured Minister of Trade, Wasantha Samarasinghe, that the prices of imported milk powder and wheat flour in the country will not be increased.

They further pledged that sufficient stocks of imported milk powder and wheat flour will be supplied for the next three months, and confirmed that no price hikes of any kind will be introduced until the end of the upcoming New Year season.

The assurance was given during a meeting convened at the Ministry to discuss the impact of the prevailing war situation on supply and distribution networks and the need to maintain uninterrupted supply. 

Milk powder importers and wheat flour companies acknowledged that rising fuel prices and the depreciation of the dollar had affected production costs, but emphasized their commitment to work with the government to provide relief to the public during this difficult period.

The companies also highlighted that fuel quotas have disrupted distribution operations.

 In response, Minister Samarasinghe instructed them to register with a newly introduced special data collection program aimed at identifying the fuel requirements of transport service providers engaged in food distribution and ensuring proper planning in the sector. (Newswire)

Accordingly, the price of a 400g pack of imported milk powder has been increased by Rs. 100, with the new price being Rs. 1200.

The price of imported milk powder will be increased by 4.7%, the Milk Powder Importers Association of Sri Lanka announced today.

The Association said the price hike will be effective from 01 April 2025.

Two persons have been arrested at the Katunayake Airport for illegally bringing into Sri Lanka tins of milk powder containing formula with vitamins to enhance skin complexion.

Sri Lanka Customs officials at the airport arrested the suspects for possession of 179 such milk powder tins valued at Rs. 1.8 million.

The suspects, a man from Negombo and a woman from Kotahena, had arrived from Malaysia today.

Accordingly, the price of a 1kg packet of Milco milk powder has been reduced by Rs 190, with the new price being Rs.2585.

Prices of imported milk powder will be reduced from this week, Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando announced today.

Minister Nalin Fernando said that the prices of imported milk powder will be reduced between Rs.100 – Rs.150 per kilo.

He further said that the price reduction is expected to be implemented from next Friday (Mar 15). (NewsWire)

Local milk powder producers have announced there will be no reduction in milk powder prices, despite a reduction in the prices of imported milk powder.

Last week, milk powder importers in Sri Lanka announced that the price of imported milk powder will be reduced from today (27). 

According to the importers, the price of a 1kg packet of imported milk powder has been reduced by Rs. 200, with the new price at Rs. 2900.

The price of a 400-gram packet of imported milk powder has been reduced by Rs. 80 with the new price of Rs. 1160.

However, according to Hiru News, local milk powder producers Milco and Pelwatte have announced there will be no reduction in the prices of locally produced milk powder.

The Chairman of MILCO Private Limited Renuka Perera stated that this was due to a reduction in the stock of milk obtained from local farmers.

Perera said that local farmers who were providing nearly 1.2 million litres of milk on a daily basis are now only providing 500,000 litres of milk.

Milco Chairman said that thereby, it was impossible to reduce the prices of locally produced milk powder at present. 

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Pelwatte Dairy Industries Limited, Ariyaseela Wickramanayake said there was no requirement to reduce the price of locally produced milk powder due to a reduction in the price of imported milk powder. (NewsWire)
