The Monaragala Division Crime Investigation Unit has arrested a suspect after a year for allegedly raping and impregnating an underage girl, it was reported. 

The 25-year-old suspect, a resident of Badulla, is reported to have allegedly raped an underage girl and fled from the area when she was found to be pregnant. 

Thereafter, he was employed at a livestock farm in Guruthalawa.

Following a complaint filed by the victim, the Police had conducted investigations since August 2024.

The suspect was arrested on Monday (10) and has been handed over to the Wellawaya Police for further investigations. (Newswire)

A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor, it was reported.

The Colombo High Court had issued the sentence after finding the man guilty of sexually abusing a 09-year-old girl.

A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for sending an underaged girl as a domestic worker to Jordan. 

The accused is reported to have created a fake birth certificate and National Identity Card (NIC) for the minor, who was living with her grandmother. 

Issuing the judgement, Colombo High Court judge Nawaratne Marasinghe imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 on the accused and also ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs. 300,000 to the victim.

The justice warned that failure to pay the compensation would result in an additional 1 ½ years of jail term. 

The judge pointed out that the aggrieved girl had been subjected to torture and abuse by the householders she worked for within two months of going abroad and had later returned to Sri Lanka in 2008.

The judge noted that if she had not returned, the girl could have suffered the same fate as Rizana Nafeek, who was executed in the Middle East.

This indictment against the accused, a father of three from Kalmunai, is being presented to the court after nine years following investigations conducted regarding the girl. (Newswire)

A 50-year-old father of one has been sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually molesting an 11-year-old child during the Vesak festival in Colombo in 2015.

The Colombo High Court today sentenced the man and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on the suspect, while he was also ordered to pay a compensation of Rs. 200,000 to the victim.

The court warned that in the event the suspect fails to pay the fine and compensation, he will be sentenced to another 18 months.

The victim had been sexually molested by the suspect after having visited the Vesak Zone in Colombo along with his parents in May 2015.

The suspect is accused of luring the victim into a stall under the pretext of making a Vesak lantern, where he had sexually abused the underage child. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka Police have busted over 50 brothels that had been operating under the guise of Ayurvedic Spas in Negombo, leading to the discovery of two women, including a minor, testing positive for HIV.

The Ayurvedic spas, which had been operated illegally, were raided over the last week based on a tip-off, after which measures were taken to shut down 53 spas.

According to the Police, the raids were launched after an individual addicted to alcohol had been subjected to a medical examination during which he was found to have tested positive for HIV.

Further investigations revealed that the man, a resident of Kochchikade in Negombo, was a frequent visitor to a spa in the Negombo area.

This information led to the Police inspecting spas in the area, during which 120 young women had been taken into custody and subjected to medical examinations. 

The Police said among the women, two, including a 15-year-old girl had tested positive for HIV. 

Investigations have revealed that the minor had left home over a dispute with her relatives after which she had been sold to a spa by an individual.

The Police said one person who had engaged in sexual activities with the minor had been arrested and remanded.

Eight other spa workers who had also contracted other social diseases had been identified during the raids. 

Following the inspections, the Police have taken measures to shut down over 50 illegally operated spas in the Kochchikade and Seeduwa areas in Negombo. (NewsWire)

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in the Araawatte area in Mahiyangana.

According to the Daily News, the Police stated that the incident is reported to have taken place at the victim’s residence.

The suspect is a Grade 09 student at a school in Orubendiwewa, Mahiyangana, while the victim is also a Grade 07 student at a school in the same area. 

The Police stated that the suspect is the neighbour of the victim and had allegedly raped her while she was at home alone.

Investigations have revealed that the minor had allegedly sexually abused the victim on several previous occasions as well.

The Police stated that the victim has been admitted to the Mahiyangana Hospital for a medical examination.

The 14-year-old suspect has been arrested by the Mahiyanganaya Police who are conducting further investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
