The Cabinet has approved a special project to complete investigations into complaints on missing persons by 2027.

The Office on Missing Persons (OMP), established under Act No. 14 of 2016, has so far received 16,966 complaints, of which 10,517 remain under investigation.

The Ministry of Justice and National Integration says 25 sub-committees, comprising 75 members, including retired judges, senior administrators, and lawyers, will be appointed to carry out the work and provide justice to affected families. (Newswire)

Applications have been called to fill the vacancies in the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) by the Parliament of Sri Lanka. 

Accordingly, persons with suitable experience in fact-finding or investigation, human rights law, international humanitarian law, humanitarian response or other relevant qualifications to carry out the functions of the OMP have been requested to forward their applications on or before 27th May 2024. 

Applications should be forwarded to ‘Secretary-General to the Constitutional Council, Constitutional Council – Office, Parliament of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte by registered post or by email to constitutionalcouncil@parliament.lk. 

The Office on Missing Persons is a permanent and independent state institution tasked with searching for the truth regarding the fate of the missing and disappeared in Sri Lanka and protecting the rights and interests of the victims and their families.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has made recommendations to the Government of Sri Lanka on the measures to be taken in addressing persons missing during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

The ITJP said that after more than three decades of protests by Families of the Disappeared to learn the truth about what happened to their loved ones, the time has come for the Sri Lankan state to demonstrate conclusively that it is serious about establishing the truth and ensuring accountability.

Issuing a statement, the ITJP said that in Sri Lanka, October 27th marked the thirty-third year that families, mainly from the south, have commemorated their disappeared loved ones and called for justice. 

The ITJP further said that their long and agonising search for truth is a warning to thousands of Tamils who have likewise been protesting since the end of the war in 2009.

“One hundred and eighty-eight Tamil parents of the disappeared from the war are already reported to have died before learning the truth, while young men who attend protests or commemorations in the north and east continue to be picked up and tortured to silence them,” the ITJP revealed.
