A suspect preparing to throw a bag containing ICE narcotics, tobacco, mobile phones, and phone chargers over the wall of the Galle Prison was arrested yesterday (20), it was reported. 

According to the Lankadeepa newspaper, the Police Special Task Force (STF) said the suspect was arrested in the Kandewatta area in Galle.

The suspect, a 30‑year‑old resident of Galle, was taken into custody inside his residence following information received by STF officers attached to the Akmeemana camp.

During the search, STF officers recovered 2.590 grams of ICE narcotics, 110 grams of tobacco, 540 grams of rolled tobacco, four mobile phones, and 23 mobile phone chargers.

The arrested suspect has been handed over to the Galle Police Station for further investigations. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka Customs has seized Rs. 60 million worth of electronic equipment, including mobile phones and computers, at the Katunayake Airport.

According to reports, a 22-year-old businessman had illegally brought in the electronic equipment to Sri Lanka today.

The electronic equipment, which includes mobile phones, tablets and MacBooks, were brought from Dubai. 

The passenger who had illegally brought the electronic equipment is a resident of Avissawella, while the goods have been seized as state assets. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has warned the public not to be deceived by text messages (SMS) and phone calls to mobile phones claiming to grant money.

SLCERT’s Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola said information has been received about people making fake phone calls and defrauding money.

“These days, you may receive fake messages on your mobile phone. These fake messages may claim that you have won gifts and money. Various discounts, work-from-home opportunities, foreign jobs etc. can also be sent to you,” he said. 

Charuka Damunupola further urged the public to be careful and refrain from sharing personal information through such messages. (Newswire)

Four suspects have been apprehended with several illegally smuggled items, including electronic equipment, worth Rs. 30 million.

The Police stated that the four suspects were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.

The group had illegally smuggled electronic equipment, including 81 laptops and mobile phones.

The suspects had also illegally smuggled foreign liquor and cigarettes into Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

Two teenagers were reported dead after being hit by a train near the Wadurawa Railway Station early last morning (May 25).

The Veyangoda Police stated that the two boys who were on their way for a leisure trip had been walking on the railway tracks while being on their mobile phones at the time of the accident.

The victims have been identified as residents of Waduruwa, aged 18 and 19 years.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the two victims’ houses are located close to the Railway track and they had walked towards the Wadurawa Railway station along the railway tracks.

The mobile number portability facility, which was expected to be introduced in Sri Lanka last year, will be further delayed, it was reported.

According to The Sunday Morning, the delay was due to the consortium named ‘Lanka Portability’, formed by the mobile companies in the country, being unable to finalise a suitable technical partner to implement the facility.

Despite a tender having been called by the consortium last year and several proposals being received, the consortium had decided to call for new tenders due to several technical issues and the lack of confidence in the companies that had submitted their proposals.

When inquired in this regard, State Minister of Technology Kanaka Herath said that he has been informed of the issue by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).

The TRCSL has informed that the consortium was not happy with the qualifications of those that had responded to the tender called by it seeking a technical partnership.

Acknowledging the delay, State Minister Kanaka Herath assured that the facility would be introduced within this year.

The TRCSL laid the framework for implementing number portability and full portability, which includes fixed services, in Sri Lanka last year. 

The company named ‘Lanka Portability’ was, thereafter, formed to include all telecommunication companies and TRCSL approval for mobile number portability was granted in October 2021.

Recently, the TRCSL announced legal clearance for telecommunication service providers to implement number portability in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
