14 motorcyclists who had been riding recklessly and engaging in races have been apprehended during a raid conducted by the Police in Pannipitiya on Sunday.

The motorcyclists had engaged in reckless racing from High-Level Road in Maharagama to Kottawa.

The Police arrested 14 motorcyclists along with their motorcycles during the raid conducted based on a tip-off.

The suspects aged between 18 to 25 years are residents of various parts of Sri Lanka. 

Police investigations reveal the races are organized via messages shared on social media platforms, based on which motorcyclists from various parts of the country participate in the races for money. (Newswire)

Nine youths have been arrested for attempting to engage in a motorcycle race for cash bets in the Gorakapola area in the Western Province early this morning (Aug. 14).

According to Lankadeepa, the Panadura North Police apprehended the suspects based on a tip-off on the motorcycle race to be conducted on Galle Road.

The group was arrested while preparing to commence the race near the Gorakapola Fuel Station at around 12.30 am today. 

The arrested suspects are aged between 20 and 26 years and are residents of Moratuwa and surrounding areas.

Sixteen motorcycles have been taken into Police custody on charges of having been ridden in a reckless manner on the Weliwita Wewa Road in Kaduwela last evening.

The Police stated that the group was apprehended following a tip-off to the Police officers of the Kaduwela station who were engaged in motor traffic duty.

The youths were found to be speeding and racing in the motorcycles, with some one-wheeling and without helmets.

The group had disregarded Police orders to stop and had sped away, after which the officers had chased after them and took into custody 16 motorcycles.

The suspects aged between 18 to 26 years have been identified as residents of Wellampitiya, Mulleriyawa, Angoda, Malabe, and Kelanimulla.

The group has been instructed to appear before the Kaduwela Magistarte’s Court tomorrow (July 18).
