The Welisara Magistrate’s Court yesterday (14 Jan) imposed fines totalling Rs. 300,000 on three traders in the Gampaha District after they admitted guilt in cases filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority for selling rice above the maximum retail price.

According to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), each offender was imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000.

According to court proceedings, the raids revealed the following violations:

  • Ekala area, Ja-Ela: A shop was found selling Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 308 per kilogram, exceeding the approved price. Fine imposed: Rs. 100,000.
  • Ja-Ela public market: A trader was caught selling Samba rice at Rs. 275 per kilogram, exceeding the approved price. Fine imposed: Rs. 100,000.
  • Palliya Road, Kandana: A shop was detected selling Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 280 per kilogram, exceeding the approved price. Fine imposed: Rs. 100,000.

The Consumer Affairs Authority confirmed that strict legal action will continue against traders violating controlled price regulations. (Newswire)

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has warned that selling rice at a price higher than the gazetted maximum retail price is a punishable offence under the law.

Issuing a statement, the CAA said that traders who sell rice above the maximum retail price will face strict legal action, such as the following penalties; 

  • For Proprietorships:

Minimum fine: Rs. 100,000

Maximum fine: Rs. 500,000 or 6 months imprisonment or both

  • For Private Limited Companies / Bodies Corporate:

Minimum fine: Rs. 500,000

Maximum fine: Rs. 5,000,000

The CAA further urged the public to inform of traders selling rice above the maximum retail price via the CAA’s hotline 1977. (Newswire)

The Salt Manufacturers’ Association has decided to impose maximum retail prices for salt products and reduce prices. 

As such, the following maximum retail prices will be imposed:

  • Crystal salt – Rs. 180 per kg
  • Table salt – Rs. 240 per kg
  • A 400g pack of table salt – Rs. 120

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has issued a Gazette notification stipulating the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for bottled drinking water.

As per the Gazette notification, the Maximum Retail Prices are effective from 01 April 2025. 

Accordingly, the MRP for bottled drinking water are as follows;

  • 500 – 999 ml bottles – Rs.70
  • 01 -1.499 L bottles – Rs.100
  • 1.5 -1.999 L bottles – Rs.130
  • 02 – 2.499 L bottles – Rs.160

A Gazette notification has been issued stipulating the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) per 01 kilo for several varieties of rice.

Per the Gazette, the Consumer Affairs Authority orders that no manufacturer, producer, supplier, distributor or trader shall sell, supply, expose or offer for sale, display for sale the said local varieties of rice exceeding the MRP.

A Gazette notification that was issued on November 03, 2023, imposing a maximum retail price (MRP) for sugar has been revoked.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) announced that the Gazette has been revoked with immediate effect.

The CAA had issued the Gazette under the powers vested in Section 20(5) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 09 of 2003.

As per the Gazette, no Importer, Manufacturer, Distributor, Supplier or Trader can sell, Supply, Expose or offer for sale, display for sale, or supply for sale white and brown sugar above the Maximum Retail Price.

Accordingly, the CAA had set an MRP of Rs. 275.00 per Kg for unpacketed white sugar and Rs. 295.00 per Kg for packeted white sugar.

An MRP of Rs. 330.00 per Kg was set for unpacketed brown sugar and Rs. 350.00 per Kg for packeted brown sugar.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has introduced a new hotline for consumers to lodge complaints against retail store owners selling rice above the stipulated maximum retail price (MRP). 

According to Lankadeepa, the CAA has requested consumers to file their complaints via the hotline – 1977.

The CAA further said the MRP of a kilo of red or white Nadu rice is Rs. 220, a kilo of Keeri Samba is Rs. 260, a kilo of Samba rice is Rs. 230, and red or white Kekulu rice is Rs. 210.

Stating that raids have commenced to apprehend retail store owners selling rice above the stipulated MRP, the CAA warned that a minimum fine of Rs. 100,000 will be imposed on those arrested.

The CAA revealed that complaints are being received on a daily basis from the public of retail store owners selling rice above the stipulated MRP. (NewsWire)
