The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a Treasury‑owned company to manage Sri Lanka’s multimodal transport centers, in a bid to create a more efficient, integrated, and user‑friendly passenger transport system.

The government has identified multimodal centers as a solution to ensure smooth transfers and interconnections among buses, trains, hired vehicles, and other modes of transport.

The Makumbura and Kadawatha centers are already operational, while construction is underway at Anuradhapura (South) and Kandy.

At the Cabinet meeting held on December 29, 2025, ministers discussed the need for a permanent institutional structure under the Ministry of Transport to oversee operations, administration, standardization, business development, and national‑level policy coordination of these centers.

Following consultations among officials from the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, and relevant departments, it was recommended to establish a limited public company under the Ministry of Transport, in line with the State Finance Management Act No. 44 of 2024. The company will be fully owned by the Treasury.

The proposal, presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, was endorsed by the Cabinet, paving the way for streamlined management of Sri Lanka’s growing multimodal transport network. (Newswire)
