Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake says a new regulation will be imposed soon for buses and vans used for the transportation of people on long-distance journeys. 

Addressing the media, Minister Rathnayake said the regulation is based on 06 key factors.

He said it will be made mandatory for buses and vans travelling over 100 km and doing cross-border journeys to obtain a vehicle inspection certificate prior to the journey. 

“These are not large-scale checks, but inspections such as the condition of the tyres, mirrors, and brakes. All buses and vans that cross provinces will be required to conduct this inspection 48 hours prior to the journey and obtain the necessary certificate. This is what has been recommended under the new law,” Minister Rathnayake said. 

The minister requested that the public engaging in leisure tours in such vehicles ensure that the vehicle has undergone the necessary inspections prior to the journey.

He pointed out that safety in public transportation can only be ensured via the necessary regulations. (Newswire)
