The body of a newborn was found in a forest area in the Santhiveli area in Batticaloa early this morning (15 Mar). 

According to the Police, the body of the newborn was found close to the Devapuram Grounds in the area.

The body has been placed at the Batticaloa Hospital for a postmortem examination.

A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of having murdered a newborn child in the Chavakachcheri area.

The Police said information had been received that a newborn child had been murdered by being thrown into a well in the Muththia Watte area last morning.

Police investigations had found pieces of cloth with blood stains buried in a land belonging to a house close to the well.

The Police had also taken into custody a woman assumed to be the newborn’s mother. 

The Chavakachcheri Police is conducting investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
