The Department for Registration of Persons has announced that National Identity Cards (NICs) for students sitting the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations this year will be expedited.

Director General Jagath Herath said the Department expects to issue permanent NICs to all students before the end of the year.

He noted that schools have already been informed through the Ministry of Education to submit applications for students sitting the Ordinary Level examination, and principals must ensure these are forwarded without delay.

Herath further stated that Advanced Level candidates scheduled to sit the examination in August who have applied for an NIC but have not yet received it can obtain their cards by notifying the Department through the telephone numbers or email addresses listed on its official website.

The Department for Registration of Persons has issued a public warning after it was revealed that certain parties are misusing the department’s hotline number and name to obtain personal information and commit financial fraud.

According to the statement, calls have been made using numbers similar to the official hotline, including +94115226126, +0115226126, and mobile numbers 0771167739 and 0742756098, to deceive individuals.

The department said fraudsters have also created a mobile application using the state emblem, falsely claiming to register details for a digital identity card or e‑National Identity Card.

The department stressed that it does not carry out such registrations and urged the public not to provide personal information to suspicious calls or fraudulent websites, including the fake website https://drpgov-lk[.]com, which resembles the official site of the department.

Reiterating its position, the Department for Registration of Persons advised citizens to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to such scams. (Newswire)

The One-Day National Identity Card (NIC) Issuance Service was officially launched in the North Western Province yesterday, at the Department for Registration of Persons provincial office in Kurunegala.

The service was launched under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, marking a significant step forward in improving public convenience.

Currently, provincial offices are operational in Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Batticaloa, and Vavuniya, with the one-day NIC issuance service already functioning successfully at the Galle and Nuwara Eliya offices.

With the launch of this new service, residents of the North Western Province will no longer need to travel to the Department’s Head Office in Colombo to obtain their National Identity Cards. Instead, they will now have the facility to receive the service within just a few hours at the Kurunegala Provincial Office.

The investment funds and technical support for this initiative are provided by the Electronic National Identity Card Project, and similar offices are planned to be opened in other provinces in the near future.

This new initiative further strengthens the government’s commitment to delivering fast, reliable, and technologically advanced public services to the citizens of Sri Lanka.

The Department for Registration of Persons is the sole government institution vested with constitutional authority to verify personal identity. It has recently implemented a series of organizational and technological reforms to provide the public with faster and more efficient services.

Under a Cabinet-approved proposal empowering the Electronic National Identity Card (eNIC) Project, the Department has begun decentralizing its services by establishing new provincial offices, enabling people to access services closer to their homes. (Newswire)
