Former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne, who was under remand custody in relation to a disappearance case, has been released on bail by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court. 

Ulugetenne was arrested in July in connection with the disappearance of a youth from Pothuhera, reportedly during his tenure as Director of Naval Intelligence. 

Meanwhile, former Navy Intelligence Director Rear Admiral (Retd.) Sarath Mohotti was also arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on Sept. 18, on charges related to the disappearance. (Newswire)

Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Admiral (Rtd) Nishantha Ulugetenne, has been further remanded until 13 August.

He was further remanded after being produced before the Polgahawela Magistrate’s Court today.

Sri Lanka Police says former high-ranking state officials, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Admiral (Retired) Nishantha Ulugetenne and former SDIG Priyantha Jayakody, were arrested based on separate investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Police said former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne was arrested yesterday based on a probe conducted by the CID into the disappearance of an individual. 

Nishantha Ulugetenne was arrested and produced before the Polgahawela Magistrate’s Court, after which he was remanded until 30 July.

Meanwhile, former SDIG Priyantha Jayakody was arrested based on information revealed by a suspect who was arrested for allegedly threatening former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and SDIG Lalith Pathinayake, pretending to be an underworld figure residing overseas.

Based on the investigations, the CID had arrested the suspect yesterday and produced him before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court.

Interrogations of the suspect had revealed that the man had pretended to be an underworld figure and had threatened former minister Alles and SDIG Pathinayake at the request of former SDIG Priyantha Jayakody. 

Based on the revelation, the CID arrested former SDIG Priyantha Jayakody yesterday, while he is due to be produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today.

Former Sri Lanka Navy Commander Admiral (Retired) Nishantha Ulugetenne has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). 

Nishantha Ulugetenne was arrested today over the disappearance of a youth from Pothuhera.

The incident is reported to have occurred during his tenure as the Director of Naval Intelligence.

Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne assumed office as the 24th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy on 15th July 2020.
