The National Secretariat for Elders has officially recognized Bolland Hakuru Meniyel, a resident of Karandeniya in Galle District, as Sri Lanka’s oldest living male at the age of 110.

According to his old national identity card, Meniyel was born on June 4, 1915, in the Angulugalla Grama Niladhari Division, Karandeniya Divisional Secretariat. Officials said he has lived his entire life in the area, dedicating himself to agriculture, cinnamon cultivation, and village community work.

Despite his age, Meniyel remains in good health and can still read and write, having been educated up to Grade 5. His family attributes his longevity to a simple lifestyle and a diet free of toxins. He is known locally for his active participation in religious activities, having attended village pirith ceremonies until the age of 75.

Meniyel is the father of nine children and continues to enjoy the affection of his extended family. District Secretary W.A. Dharmasiri recently visited his home to present gifts and inquire after his well-being.

Meniyel, a recipient of the government’s Centenarian Allowance, is regarded as a proud symbol of Galle’s heritage, carrying over a century of memories and traditions. (Newswire)

The world’s oldest living man has turned 112 at his care home in Merseyside, United Kingdom.

John Alfred Tinniswood, who lives in Southport, put his long life down to “just luck”, and said he did not follow a special diet, except for eating fish and chips every Friday.

Tinniswood was born in 1912 – the same year the Titanic sunk. He became the world’s oldest living man earlier this year, inheriting the title from 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez, of Venezuela, who died in April.

Tinniswood already held the title of the UK’s oldest man, which he gained in 2020.

A lifelong Liverpool football fan, Tinniswood was born in the city only 20 years after the club was founded. He has lived through almost all of the club’s highs and lows, including all eight of the Reds’ FA Cup wins and most of their league victories.

The oldest man ever recorded was Jiroemon Kimura, of Japan, who died in 2013 at the age of 116 years and 54 days.

Meanwhile, the world’s oldest living person is the Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, who is 116. 

She only took over the title this month after Maria Branyas Morera, who died in her nursing home in Olot, north-eastern Spain, at the age of 117 years and 168 days.

The oldest verified person on record is the Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in 1997 aged 122 years and 164 days. (The Guardian)

Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez Mora, certified in 2022 by Guinness World Records as the oldest man in the world, died on Tuesday at the age of 114, officials and relatives said.

“Juan Vicente Perez Mora has transcended into eternity at 114 years of age,” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on social media platform X.

Perez was officially confirmed as the oldest man alive on February 4, 2022, when he was 112 years and 253 days old, according to Guinness.

A father of 11, as of 2022 he had 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The farmer known as Tio Vicente was born in the town of El Cobre, in the Andean state of Tachira on May 27, 1909, and was the ninth of 10 children.

“At the age of five years old, he started working with his dad and brothers in agriculture and assisted with sugar cane and coffee harvesting,” a Guinness statement from 2022 said. (AFP)
