An Islamic priest who had conducted religious activities for the recent Joint Opposition rally in Nugegoda has claimed receiving threats for his participation. 

The Moulavi filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday, in this regard.

Speaking to the media, the Moulavi said he had been invited to conduct religious activities for the event and had attended for this purpose.

“From November 21st evening, I started receiving threats via the telephone and on social media, especially Facebook and YouTube. People were questioning why I conducted religious activities for this group and who invited me. They also threatened that they will deal with me if I continue to engage with the group,” he added. Loudspeakers prepared for the Joint Opposition Rally in Nugegoda have been taken down after the Sri Lankan Police issued special conditions, citing the ongoing GCE Advanced Level Examinations. 

United National Party’s (UNP) Deputy Secretary General of Political Mobilization, Harin Fernando, said the speakers were taken down a short while ago.

Organizers have questioned the double standards of the Police, pointing out that loudspeakers were allowed for the National People’s Power (NPP) rally that was held in Tangalle yesterday, also during the A/Level exams, while the opposition has been made to take down the speakers for the rally today.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has confirmed his participation in the joint opposition rally planned for November 21.

Speaking to reporters, Rajapaksa said he will definitely attend the rally and that a large crowd is anticipated at the event. 

When inquired about the participation of the main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the former President further said that the party has not held any talks with him on the rally. 

“I am sure there will be a large crowd. This rally is important for someone to stand up against the government,” he added.

Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader MP Mano Ganesan says his party will not participate in the joint opposition rally that has been organized for November 21.

Speaking to reporters, MP Ganesan said the TPA will not participate in the rally due to certain reasons, which he did not specify.

He further said that he is unsure of the decision of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). 

Refuting remarks that the decision was due to issues with SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa, MP Mano Ganesan said there was no issue with any politicians.

Jovially holding MP Dayasiri Jayasekara by the shoulder, MP Ganesan said they are all good friends, adding, “Anura is also my good friend”. (Newswire)
