The Police Illegal Assets Investigation Division has frozen property worth around Rs. 300 million, believed to have been purchased with money earned from drug trafficking by an organized criminal.

The suspect, who was recently brought back to Sri Lanka from overseas, is alleged to have bought assets under his daughter’s name using proceeds from narcotics trafficking. 

According to the Police, following a complaint, the Police’s Illegal Assets Investigation Division launched an investigation.

During the probe, it was revealed that the suspect had acquired a two‑storey house and land in Pannipitiya valued at approximately Rs. 300 million.

Acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, authorities issued an order to freeze the property for seven days starting from today (05 March).

CCTV footage of the multi-vehicle collision in Pannipitiya this morning, in which two persons were reported dead, has been released to the media.

The CCTV footage shows a three-wheeler exiting a fuel station and driving straight across the road, during which it is hit by a luxury bus. 

At the time of the accident, it was reported that after hitting the three-wheeler, the bus had collided with the rear of a lorry, pushing it into another vehicle. 

The drivers of the three-wheeler and the bus were reported to have died in the incident. (Newswire)

The driver of a three‑wheeler and the driver of a luxury bus tragically lost their lives in an accident that occurred this morning (24 Feb) in front of the IOC fuel station in Pannipitiya. 

According to reports, the incident took place when the bus collided with a three‑wheeler that was recklessly crossing the road, then veered to the right side and struck the rear of a stationary lorry.

With the impact, the lorry was pushed forward and collided with another lorry parked ahead.

14 motorcyclists who had been riding recklessly and engaging in races have been apprehended during a raid conducted by the Police in Pannipitiya on Sunday.

The motorcyclists had engaged in reckless racing from High-Level Road in Maharagama to Kottawa.

The Police arrested 14 motorcyclists along with their motorcycles during the raid conducted based on a tip-off.

The suspects aged between 18 to 25 years are residents of various parts of Sri Lanka. 

Police investigations reveal the races are organized via messages shared on social media platforms, based on which motorcyclists from various parts of the country participate in the races for money. (Newswire)
