Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe met members of the Free Lawyers organization who visited the Attorney General’s Department today to discuss the pressure being exerted on him to resign.

The Free Lawyers organization handed over a letter to the Attorney General voicing their support for him.

Speaking to the members of the Free Lawyers organization, Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe said those who know the law know that he is not above the law.

“If I make a mistake, then the Court of Appeal is there. The Supreme Court is there. Please go there and challenge me. If the court tells me to do something, I will be more than happy to do it,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the letter handed over to the Attorney General, the Free Lawyers organization stated, “Our organization has observed that, through social media, false, defamatory, and hostile content targeting you and the Attorney General’s Department is being continuously published in an organized manner. Spreading such false and deliberately distorted information among the public is their habit, aimed at creating hatred and damaging social respect.”

The organization further said that a group of overseas journalists as well as local YouTubers and social media activists are actively contributing to this process.

“It appears that certain individuals are attempting to destroy the Attorney General’s Department and use it for political or personal objectives. These campaigns, carried out without understanding the difference between the role of an investigator and that of a prosecutor, pose a serious threat not only to your dignity but also to the impartiality of the Department,” the organization pointed out.

The letter noted that on several previous occasions, these groups have also attempted to exert similar pressure on judges and members of the judicial service.

“We firmly believe that the Attorney General’s Department has always acted independently and honorably, without yielding to any influence, and that it must follow evidence and legal procedures rather than popular sentiment.

“Our organization expresses its full cooperation and support for you to carry out your duties freely and without interference, and we wish you strength, courage, and blessings to continue acting impartially in the process of delivering justice,” it added. (Newswire)
