Sri Lanka players are wearing black armbands during today’s World Cup match against India to pay tribute to the late Percy Abeysekera, the legendary cheerleader.

Abeysekera, fondly known as ‘Uncle Percy’, was an integral part of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka and played a pivotal role from beyond the boundary line to support and motivate the players.

His towering legacy spans across Sri Lanka’s pre- and post-test eras, with his name remaining etched forever among cricket lovers. 

Veteran Sri Lanka cheerleader Percy Abeysekera passed away on October 30, 2023.

Veteran Sri Lanka cheer squad leader Percy Abeysekera, fondly known as ‘Uncle Percy’ by cricket fans across the world, has passed away.

Sri Lanka’s famous cheer squad leader celebrated his 87th birthday in August this year but has reportedly been unwell in the recent past.

In September, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) presented Rs. 5 million to Percy Abeysekera to support his well-being and maintenance of good health. 

Uncle Percy was known to be one of the longest-standing supporters of the Sri Lankan cricket team.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has presented Rs. 5 million to Percy Abeysekera, Sri Lanka’s legendary cheerleader on the cricket field. 

Issuing a statement, the SLC stated that this donation was made to Abeysekera to support his wellbeing and maintenance of good health. 

The decision was taken by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, headed by Shammi Silva, President of Sri Lanka Cricket. 

“Percy’s contribution to the game of cricket in Sri Lanka as a cheerleader is immeasurable, and he has been a tower of strength for the players and to the game as a whole, and it was our turn to give back and look into his well being,” said Mohan de Silva, Honorary Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket. 

The donation was handed over to Percy Abeysekera by SLC  Honorary Secretary Mohan De Silva, when he visited the former’s house on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket to inquire about his health and wellbeing. (NewsWire)
