The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development to complete the renovation of the remaining section of the Maharagama–Piliyandala road using government funds.

The project involves the renovation and upgrading of the road section between the 2+000 km and 3+700 km marks.

It is a part of a broader project financed through a US$ 50 million loan agreement with the OPEC Fund for International Development, which was aimed at upgrading 46 km of national roads in the Colombo District, the government said.

The Maharagama–Piliyandala road, spanning 6.7 km, has been identified as the final project under this loan scheme. Of this, one kilometre has already been renovated, while the remaining 5.7 km is being upgraded in three packages.

Work on the A and C sections, covering approximately four kilometres, is currently underway. However, the remaining 1.7 km referred to as the B portion, could not be financed under the existing loan allocation.

Accordingly the government has decided to fund the completion of this segment to ensure the full rehabilitation of the Maharagama–Piliyandala road. (Newswire)
