The Inland Revenue Department has informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate that steps are being taken to file indictments in the Colombo High Court against popular actress Piumi Hansamali.

The department informed the court on Monday (15) that the indictments are to be filed against Piumi Hansamali, the proprietor of Lolia Skin Care (a private company selling skin‑whitening creams), for evading the payment of Rs. 225 million in taxes to the government.

It was further stated that Piumi Hansamali, who is said to have become a millionaire in a short period of time, will face indictments in the High Court on the instructions of the Attorney General.

Actress and entrepreneur Piumi Hansamali has rejected claims that she had any connection with the recently arrested underworld figure known as “Kehelbaddara Padme.”

Media reports earlier today said that Hansamali had been questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding her alleged links to Padme.

In a Facebook post, she clarified that she had only met Kehelbaddara Padme once in March 2022 during a New Year celebration in Dubai, and that the meeting was casual.

“I first saw this person at that event with his wife and children. They took a photo with me. He also said that he wanted to become fair and more attractive, so I told him to use my Piumi Skin products,” she wrote. Hansamali said that Padme must have used her products, as he now looks very attractive. 

Hansamali insisted that she has never been involved in any financial dealings with Padme.

“The CID asked if I had any monetary transactions with him — never ever! I have no need for drug money, illegal money, or any black money. I’m an independent woman who built my business, Piumi Skin Private Limited,” she said.

She added humorously that she has no connection to the underworld, saying, “I’m scared of those things — I don’t want to die of a gunshot in vain.”

The Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court has called for a Government Analyst’s report regarding the quality of whitening creams produced and distributed by a company run by Sri Lankan model Piumi Hansamali, it was reported. 

According to media reports, the order was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya yesterday (15) to the Department of Criminal Investigation’s Illegal Assets and Intellectual Property Investigations Division. 

The Government Analyst’s report has been called for to verify whether the creams distributed by Hansamali’s company are safe for human use.

It is reported that the Illegal Assets and Intellectual Property Investigations Division had made a request to the court in this regard. 

Furthermore, the department has also launched investigations into allegations that Piumi Hansamali has purchased assets beyond her declared income.

These include a Range Rover worth Rs 80 million used by a former President, a house in Colombo 7 valued at Rs 148 million, and 19 bank accounts owned by Hansamali. 

Inquiries into Hansamali’s assets have been launched based on a complaint submitted by civil society activist Sanjaya. (Newswire)

The Inland Revenue Department has informed the Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court that it intends to file indictments before the Colombo High Court against Sri Lankan model Piumi Hansamali and Aura Lanka Group Chairman Viranjith Thambugala over alleged tax evasion.

Senior State Counsel Dinesh Perera, appearing on behalf of the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, told the court yesterday (July 31) that investigation reports have been submitted to the Attorney General, and that indictments are expected to be filed soon before the High Court.

According to the Mawbima newspaper, Piumi Hansamali is accused of failing to pay Rs. 194 million in personal income tax for the years 2022 and 2023, including Rs. 95 million in tax owed through business activity under the company named “Lolila”.

Chairman of Aura Lanka Group, Thambugala, is also accused of evading Rs. 194 million in income and additional taxes, including penalties and interest, during the same period.

The Inland Revenue Department alleges that both individuals committed willful tax evasion under Sections 186, 189, and 190 of the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017.

The department also submitted updated progress reports on the investigations to the court, noting that both suspects had deliberately deprived the State of taxes due. (Newswire)

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been summoned to appear before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court based on a motion submitted by Sri Lankan model Piumi Hansamali. 

Filing the motion on behalf of Piumi Hansamali, who is being investigated by the CID under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, her lawyer informed the court that her business has been severely affected due to the actions of the CID. 

The lawyer further said that CID officials have been questioning customers who purchase cosmetics from his client’s business, causing significant inconvenience and that it was a violation of her fundamental rights. 

Taking into consideration the facts, the court today ordered the OIC of the Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the CID to appear in court on 21 March 2025.

Model Piumi Hansamali has filed a petition with the Court of Appeal, seeking an order to suspend the investigation against her by the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Illegal Assets Investigations Division.

The petition names several officials, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director of the CID, as respondents.

In her petition, Hansamali asserted that the CID’s Illegal Assets Investigations Division investigation against her is being conducted unjustly and has caused her severe prejudice.

The petitioner requested the Court of Appeal to review the case being heard before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and to issue a writ order to suspend the CID’s ongoing probe. (Newswire)

Sri Lankan Model Piumi Hansamali reported to the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Illegal Assets Investigations Division today to record a statement over allegations of having acquired assets through illegal means. 

Piumi Hansamali arrived with bags full of files and receipts to be provided to the CID.

Speaking to reporters, Hansamali said she had acquired a vehicle and a house from the money earned through the sale of her cosmetic product, adding that all transactions had been performed through legal banking channels. 

She further revealed that her own investigations have found that another individual also in the cosmetic business was behind the various allegations.
