Sri Lanka Police says a special investigation has been launched into several politicians who own luxury property in Colombo.

It is reported that the probe is being conducted by the Illegal Assets and Intellectual Property Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

According to the Police, several prominent former ministers are among the politicians being investigated. 

The Lankadeepa newspaper reports that the CID has launched a probe into the assets of 28 politicians, including current Parliamentarians and former ministers. 

The report states that investigations are also underway into a former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army. 

It is reported that the CID has launched an investigation based on several complaints received from various parties regarding illegally acquired assets. 

The Lankadeepa newspaper quotes that investigations into the assets of politicians, including Namal Rajapaksa, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Mahinda Amaraweera, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Kanchana Wijesekara, Sagala Rathnayake, Janaka Tissa Kuttiyarachchi, Wajira Abeywardena, Mahipala Herath, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Manusha Nanayakkara, Vadivel Suresh, Thushara Sanjeeva Pathirane, Harshana Rajakaruna, Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan (Pillayan), and Shantha Abeysekera, and former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva. Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa has called for an investigation into the compensation paid to 43 MPs for houses that were torched during the 2022 unrest, despite being covered by fire insurance.

According to Sri Lanka’s disaster relief policy, governed by the Disaster Management Act of 2005, compensation for a completely destroyed house caps at Rs. 2.5 million, he said.

However, Dr. Mahanamahewa raised concerns over larger sums being allocated to MPs, questioning the legal basis for these payments.

According to Dr. Mahanamahewa, the compensation was determined by the previous government based on recommendations from a committee appointed by the then Minister of Public Administration.

“Some MPs have claimed that they did not request compensation but they were given the compensation. How does that happen? Who approved these?” he questioned, urging authorities to review the criteria used by this committee.

He also revealed that many affected MPs had already received insurance payouts for their damaged properties.

Dr. Mahanamahewa also suggested that the government initiate a process to recover the excess funds from the Treasury. (Newswire)

The Bribery Commission is due to file indictments against two former ministers of the previous government for failing to explain how they acquired certain assets, it was reported.

According to The Sunday Times, the Bribery Commission is also investigating a former minister’s driver who had allegedly bought a luxury house and land in Cinnamon Gardens. 

Meanwhile, legal action is also to be initiated to freeze properties belonging to seven persons, including politicians, public officials, and military officers, over the suspicious acquisition of a large number of assets.

The Bribery Commission has taken measures to initiate legal action after probes found that the individuals were not capable of acquiring the properties with their normal salaries.

Probes conducted so far have found that claims made on receiving the properties through family and relatives were false, while some politicians are reluctant to assist the investigations by providing statements. (Newswire)
