Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, will attend the funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis, to be held on Saturday (26 Apr).

According to the Foreign Ministry, Minister Vijitha Herath will represent the Government of Sri Lanka at the funeral.

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis’ funeral will take place this Saturday at 10 a.m. local time in St. Peter’s Square. 

The 88-year-old pontiff died following a stroke and subsequent irreversible heart failure on Monday.

It followed a period of ill-health that saw the Pope spend five weeks in hospital with double pneumonia. (Newswire)

The coffin of the Argentine pontiff, who died on Monday aged 88, will then be taken inside the church and from there taken to the Rome basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.

The body of Pope Francis will be taken to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning at 9 am (07:00 GMT), the Vatican said in a statement.

His body is currently laid out in a coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his 12-year papacy.

People have gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican to mourn Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope who charmed believers with his humble style. (France 24)

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, on behalf of Sri Lanka and its citizens, has expressed condolences over the demise of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.

Issuing a statement, the Vatican said Pope Francis had died a day after making an appearance at Saint Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

“This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the statement published by the Vatican on its Telegram channel.

The 88-year-old pontiff gave the traditional Easter blessing on Sunday, appearing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in front of delighted crowds, which was his last appearance.

Pope Francis, who spent 38 days in hospital with double pneumonia, where he came close to death, is unable to speak for long periods due to his respiratory difficulties and was undergoing physiotherapy to help regain his voice, while he also has difficulty raising his arms.

But on Easter Sunday, he was able to offer the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing to the “City [of Rome] and to the World” while an aide read his address. Only the pope can offer this blessing, which includes the offer of an indulgence, a remission for the effects of sins.

His voice sounded weak, but he appeared without the nasal canula he had been wearing to receive oxygen as he said, “Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter.” He later greeted cheering crowds in St. Peter’s Square from the popemobile, the first time he had done so since his hospitalisation. (Newswire)

Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Sunday and he will return to his residence in the Vatican to continue his convalescence.

Pope Francis, 88, was hospitalized on February 14 with double pneumonia from a severe respiratory infection. 

Speaking to journalists on Saturday evening, Doctor Sergio Alfieri, head of the Gemelli Hospital medical team that has been treating the Pope for an acute respiratory tract infection and bilateral pneumonia said “The good news the world and everyone is waiting for is that tomorrow the Holy Father will be discharged. Tomorrow he will return to Santa Marta.”

Doctor Alfieri, flanked by the Pope’s personal physician, Doctor Sergio Carbone, explained that the decision to discharge the Pope follows steady and rapid medical improvements in his clinical condition and the lifting of the prognosis.

He noted that the past week has seen significant improvements. He confirmed that when the Pope was admitted to hospital on 14 February, he was suffering an acute respiratory insufficiency due to a polymicrobial infection that resulted in bilateral pneumonia. This, he explained, necessitated a combined pharmacological treatment.

Answering questions put to him by reporters, Alfieri reiterated that the bilateral pneumonia has been successfully treated, but time is needed for a complete recovery.

Thus, the Pope has been prescribed at least two months of convalescence, during which he will be receiving medical care and will be taking an adequate period of rest.

Alfieri noted that the Holy Father’s health is improving steadily, and the hope is he will soon be able to resume a work schedule. This however, he pointed out, does not mean he will immediately be able to start meeting with people and groups as he did before.

Pointing out that throughout his time in the hospital, the doctor said Pope Francis has always stayed in touch with current events, both church-related and political, and – as we have seen – has continued to dedicate himself to work activities.
