The marking of postal ballots for the 2025 Local Government Elections commenced today.

Postal voting for the Local Government polls will be held on 24, 25, 28 and 29 April.

Voters can mark their postal ballots from 08.30 am to 04.15 pm on the allocated dates. 

According to the National Election Commission, over 648,000 voters are eligible to cast postal votes.

A 53-year-old school teacher from Kandy who was arrested on charges of taking the ballot paper out of the Polling station during postal voting recently has been released on Police bail.

It is reported that the school teacher had accidentally inserted the candidates’ list in the postal vote envelope instead of the marked ballot paper at the polling station at the Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College in Kandy. 

The teacher, a resident of Matale, had later found the marked ballot paper in her possession upon returning home and had immediately informed her school principal in this regard, handing over the marked ballot paper to him.

The principal had informed election officials in this regard, after which the teacher was arrested, as it is an offence under the Election Law to take the ballot paper outside the polling station.

Upon admitting her mistake and agreeing to appear in court when notified, the Kandy Police released the woman on Police bail. (Newswire)

Postal voting for the 2024 General Election commenced today (Oct 30).

Officials at election offices and District Secretariats, and the Police will mark their ballots during office hours today. 

The National Election Commission says it has provided an opportunity to mark postal votes on the 1st and 4th of November, as well.

State employees who fail to cast their votes during this period have been allocated 07th and 08th November to cast their votes. 

Voters have been requested to carry documents such as the National Identity Card, Valid Driving License, Valid Passport, Temporary Identity Card issued by the Election Commission, or the Information Verification Letter issued by the Department of Registration of Persons for their identification during postal voting. Postal voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the 2024 Local Government Election commenced today.

The National Election Commission announced that those unable to cast their postal votes will be allowed to do so on October 18 at the District Election Commission located in the district of their workplace.

The window to submit Postal Voting Applications for the upcoming General Election has been extended, the National Election Commission has announced.

Issuing a notice, the Election Commission said the deadline to submit postal voting applications has been extended until midnight on Thursday, 10 October 2024.

The deadline was previously scheduled to conclude at midnight today (Oct 08).

Day two of postal voting for the 2024 Presidential Election gets underway today.

Accordingly, postal voting for military personnel and government employees will be conducted today (Sep 05) and tomorrow (Sep 06).

Postal voting for the Presidential Election commenced yesterday for employees of district secretariats, election offices and Police.

Additional days, September 11 and 12, have been set aside for those unable to vote during the main period.

The Freedom People’s Alliance has urged Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to intervene in convening the Parliament to discuss the issues surrounding the postal votes of the Local Government elections.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the Freedom People’s Alliance pointed out that the National Election Commission has decided to postpone postal voting indefinitely due to the Government Printers refusing to print postal voting cards due to a lack of funds. 

The Freedom People’s Alliance stated that this was a violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens as well as the contestants of the Local Government polls.

The party, therefore, has urged the Prime Minister to intervene and enable the Parliament to convene in the coming days to discuss the issues surrounding postal voting.

Stating that the Parliament is scheduled to convene on 21st February, the Freedom People’s Alliance stated that as it is the scheduled date for postal voting for the election, Parliament must convene in the coming days to resolve the issues. (NewsWire)
