The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says short and long-term steps are being taken to prevent any repetition of the recent islandwide power outage experienced in Sri Lanka.

According to the CEB, key measures include keeping some generators at low operation, using select gas turbines to stabilise the grid, and reducing solar power during low-demand periods when necessary to prevent issues.

The measures are being taken after the CEB conducted a probe into the islandwide power disruption on 09 February.

The probe findings state the cause for the power outage was due to an imbalance in transmission.

“Due to the high penetration of non-synchronous solar PV generation, the grid had a low system inertia, making it vulnerable to faults. The disturbance resulted in an imbalance between generation and demand, leading to cascading disconnections and total power failure,” the CEB said in a statement.

The CEB has assured the public that immediate and long-term corrective actions are underway to prevent future occurrences. (Newswire)
