The Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya has announced that all Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employees will withdraw from services for 24 hours starting at 03.00 pm today (09).

Union General Secretary Prabath Priyantha told the media that despite the government’s decision to abolish the CEB, no reasonable response or collective agreement has been offered to electricity workers.

He stressed that employees will not return to duty until discussions on a collective agreement are held.

Priyantha added that while power plants and essential operations will continue, all breakdown repairs and maintenance work will be suspended during the 24‑hour period, with only essential services provided. (Newswire)

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employees have expressed displeasure over the government’s move to abolish the CEB and establish six new companies, which comes into effect today (09).

The abolishment follows the restructuring process, under which the long‑standing Ceylon Electricity Board was officially terminated at midnight yesterday (08).

Accordingly, the Ceylon Electricity Board Act No. 17 of 1969 has been repealed, and the Board has been legally abolished as an institution with electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and system operations assigned to six subsidiary companies. 

Addressing the media, the General Secretary of the CEB Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya, Prabath Priyantha, claimed that the move has been made without a proper policy plan or employees being officially informed. 

“It is a regretful day for the nearly 22,000 employees and 6.8 million consumers. After 58 years, the CEB has been abolished, and 06 companies have been established instead. This decision has been taken without a proper policy or plan, without regard for the employees and electricity consumers,” he alleged. 

Prabath Priyantha went on to note that the move has been taken without a plan for the 2000 employees going on voluntary retirement or their promised compensation. 

“With this decision, there is no legality for any of the services provided by the CEB. The 22,000 employees have not yet received any legal appointment letters. Employees cannot legally attend to bill payments, breakdowns, and other essential services. We do not possess any legal rights under the current circumstances,” he added. (Newswire)
