A 26‑year‑old pregnant woman was killed in the Palakudawa area of the Kalpitiya Police Division yesterday (03) following an assault with a sharp weapon.

Police said the victim, a resident of Palakudawa, sustained serious injuries in the attack and was admitted to the Kalpitiya Hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds along with her unborn child.

Investigations have revealed that the woman had separated from her husband and was living with the suspect. A prolonged family dispute is believed to have led to the fatal assault, carried out by the suspect with a sharp weapon.

The 36‑year‑old suspect was arrested within 45 minutes of the incident. Police noted that he is reportedly addicted to ICE narcotics.

The Ministry of Health has launched a probe into the death of a pregnant woman, along with her unborn child, at the Mannar District General Hospital last night (19 Nov). 

Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced the probe via a statement on ‘X’.

Meanwhile, the Mannar Police has also launched a probe into the death of the pregnant woman and her child. 

The Police told Newswire that a 27-year-old woman from Mannar had been admitted to the hospital for childbirth on Monday night.

She had gone into labour yesterday, during which the mother and child were pronounced dead.

The Police said the Magisterial Inquiry into the death is to be conducted after which the post-mortem examination will be conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Jaffna Hospital. (Newswire)
