The National Election Commission has detailed the types of personal identification documents which can be presented when casting votes at the 2024 Presidential Election.

The Commission stated that a ballot will not be issued at the polling station unless one of the following documents is presented:

  • The National Identity Card issued by the Department of Registration of Persons
  • A valid passport
  • A valid driving license
  • The pensioners Identity Card issued by the Department of Pensions
  • The Elders’ Identity Card issued by the Divisional Secretariat
  • The Bikkhu or Priest Identity Card issued by the Department of Registration of Persons
  • A letter issued by the Department of Registration of Persons confirming the particular of the National Identity Card
  • Temporary Identity Card issued by the Election Commission
  • Temporary Identity Card issued to disabled persons by the Election Commission

The Election Commission stressed that unclear identity cards, where photographs and details are unidentifiable or illegible, will not be accepted at the polling centres. The Commission also said that cards issued by ministries, departments, government agencies as well as receipts for applications for the National Identity Card will not be accepted for voting. The Finance Ministry has informed the Election Commission of Sri Lanka that it is prepared to allocate the necessary funds for the forthcoming presidential election, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

This was communicated during a meeting held with the Election Commission, attended by Finance Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena, on Wednesday.

A sum of Rs. 10 billion has been allocated for election purposes under the 2024 Budget, Minister Siyambalapitiya stated, noting that the government is capable of dispensing funds due to its strong practice of financial discipline.

Funds will be prioritized for election-related postage, printing, and security purposes, Siyambalapitiya said, adding that funds for other expenses will be released as required. (Newswire)
