Education Minister and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has refuted criticism by some opposition MPs that the government has failed to raise the salaries of teachers of the top 10 ranks in the salary grade, as previously promised.

Addressing the Parliament today, PM Harini Amarasuriya said that was not the case, revealing that the salaries of principals and teachers have been raised.

“The salary of principals has been increased by Rs. 30,105 and the salary of teachers by Rs. 25,360. Accordingly, principals are placed in the 7th rank and teachers in the 8th rank among the salary grades,” she added. (Newswire)

Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha has expressed regret over the incidents that occurred during the recent protest by school principals in Pelawatta.

The Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protest march near Palam Thuna Junction in Pelwatta on Tuesday (Oct 24) that was carried out by school principals over several demands. 

Issuing a statement, the Education Ministry said that the incident had taken place at a time when the Education Minister was overseas to attend a conference.

The Ministry further said that the Education Minister has expressed regret that such an incident had taken place when measures were underway to address discrepancies and issues affecting principals and other sections of the Education Sector. (NewsWire)

The Ministry of Education has issued a new directive to school principals pertaining to the GCE Ordinary Level Examinations -2022 (2023).

According to the Ministry’s statement, the Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara said principals of schools have been advised not to withhold admission cards of students sitting for the examination.

The Commissioner General of Examinations further stated that in the event any student is unable to sit for the examination due to the non-availability of admission cards, the principal shall bear the responsibility. (NewsWire)
