A group of senior prison officials, including Commissioner of Prisons (Operations and Media) Senaka Palletenna, met with the Mahanayake Theras of the Asgiri and Malwathu Chapters in Kandy today (16).

During the meeting at the Asgiri Maha Viharaya, the Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, called for the release of imprisoned Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

The Mahanayake Thera inquired whether there was a procedure through which Gnanasara Thera could be granted release.

Responding to the question, Commissioner of Prisons Senaka Palletanna stated that no definite decision had been taken regarding the matter so far.

Following the meeting, the Commissioner of Prisons visited the Malwathu Maha Viharaya, where he met the Mahanayake of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera.

During the discussion, the Malwathu Mahanayake Thera emphasised the need to establish separate detention facilities for Buddhist monks who are remanded or imprisoned over criminal charges.

He noted that although discussions had previously been held on the matter, they had concluded without reaching a decision.

The Mahanayake Thera further stressed that Buddhist monks held in custody should be accommodated in a separate facility where they are permitted to engage in religious activities without restrictions.

He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that imprisoned Buddhist monks are treated appropriately and with dignity. (Newswire)
