Officers of Sri Lanka’s Prisons Department have launched a two-day strike demanding salary revisions. 

According to the All-Ceylon Prison Officers’ Union, Prison officials islandwide have applied for sick leave from 06.00 am today until 06.00 am on  Wednesday (May 22). 

The All-Ceylon Prison Officers’ Union says the strike has been launched to demand a Rs. 25,000 salary increment or a 40% increase in allowances.

The Union points out that previously the salary schemes of Police officers and Prison officials were equal, charging that Police officers’ salaries have been significantly increased over the past ten years. 

The All-Ceylon Prison Officers’ Union has also revealed that salary increments have not been provided since 2014.

The Union added that due to the lack of sufficient salaries, over 100 Prison Officials have resigned and found different jobs, while it has also adversely affected the livelihood, especially the education of the children, of the prison officials currently remaining on duty. (Newswire)
