Former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration Priyantha Mayadunne, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today in connection to corruption allegations, has been granted bail.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered the former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration to be released on a surety of Rs. 200,000.

Following Priyantha Mayadunne’s arrest, Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said he was arrested over a financial fraud committed in 2011.

SSP Buddhika Manathunga further said that Priyantha Mayadunne was arrested over an investigation related to spending Rs.183 million from the state funds for an event held in Kurunegala to mark International Co-Operative Day.

Former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration Priyantha Mayadunne has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today in connection to corruption allegations.

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said Priyantha Mayadunne was arrested in Piliyandala over a financial fraud committed in 2011.

He further said that Priyantha Mayadunne was arrested for using Rs.183 million for an event held in Kurunegala to mark International Co-Operative Day.

The CID had launched a probe into the use of state funds for the event, while the Attorney General had also informed the CID that there were grounds to file charges against Priyantha Mayadunne in this regard.

The Police Spokesman said that based on this, CID officials arrested Priyantha Mayadunne today and he is due to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
