Springfield College brought together staff from its Kandy, Borella and Nugegoda branches for its Annual Staff Workshop, held on 19 September at Suriya Resort, Waikkal, with a focus on understanding the changing needs of today’s students.

Held under the theme “Understanding Today’s Learners: From Challenges to Opportunities,” the workshop encouraged teachers and staff to reflect on the behaviours, expectations and challenges facing young people, while exploring practical ways to turn those challenges into opportunities for learning, personal growth and stronger engagement.

The programme was conducted by Vidusha Nathavitharana and Shaakya Nathavitharana of High Five Consultancy and Luminary Learning Solutions. Through discussions, interactive activities and practical exercises, the facilitators encouraged participants to consider how educators can respond more effectively to the evolving needs of students in today’s learning environment.

A key feature of the workshop was the opportunity for staff from Springfield College’s three branches to come together in one setting. Beyond professional development, the programme created space for colleagues to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships and share experiences from their respective schools.

The day also included team-building activities and informal sessions designed to encourage collaboration, communication and fellowship among staff members.

The workshop reflected Springfield College’s focus on continuous professional development and the important role teachers play in shaping meaningful learning experiences for students.

By encouraging educators to better understand the pressures and expectations faced by today’s learners, the programme aimed to strengthen the connection between teachers and students while promoting more responsive and supportive approaches to education.

The day concluded with staff returning to their respective branches with renewed energy, shared experiences and a stronger sense of purpose in supporting the students entrusted to their care.

Following successful training for English teachers in September, OxfordAQA continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting teachers with a sold-out training session for science teachers.

The two day training, held on 14-15 October 2025 at Renuka City Hotel, Colombo focused on OxfordAQA’s popular International GCSE Science qualifications and brought together over 30 teachers from leading international schools across Sri Lanka.

The sessions were conducted by Kevin Lancaster, Chief Examiner for several of OxfordAQA’s science specifications, who guided participants through effective teaching strategies, assessment practices, and why taking Sciences with OxfordAQA allows schools flexibility to deliver a quality education with the resources they have and also equips students with the skills they need to succeed.

Reflecting on this event, OxfordAQA Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Panchalika Kulatunga, said:
“Teachers who attended the OxfordAQA GCSE Science face to face workshop showed great enthusiasm and engagement throughout the sessions. They were particularly impressed by the transparency and fairness of the marking approach, which reinforced their confidence in the assessment process.”

OxfordAQA remain committed to supporting the education community in Sri Lanka by providing high-quality professional development opportunities for teachers, with further training opportunities scheduled for the coming months across a range of subjects.
