The Parliamentary Select Committee reviewing Sri Lanka’s election laws has invited citizens, organizations, and other stakeholders to submit proposals and views on reforms, excluding those related to Provincial Council elections. 

According to a Parliament statement, submissions are open until July 15, 2026.

The Committee, chaired by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, A.H.M.H. Abayaratne, comprises 11 Members of Parliament.

Its mandate is to examine the Registration of Electors Act, Local Authorities Elections Act, Parliamentary Elections Act, and Presidential Elections Act, along with their amendments and special provisions, to assess the need for revision, consolidation, and reform.

The initiative aims to modernize and streamline Sri Lanka’s electoral framework for the Tenth Parliament.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has called for public consultation on a proposed electricity tariff revision, following a cost estimate submitted by the National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd for the second and third quarters of 2026.

The Commission said the revised estimate, presented on April 27, reflects higher generation costs due to rising global fuel prices. 

While the National System Operator projects a deficit of Rs. 38 billion, the Treasury has already committed Rs. 15 billion in subsidies to shield most consumers from tariff increases.

According to the consultation paper, 95% of household and religious consumers will not face higher tariffs, while sub‑categories of government institutions, public works, tourist hotels consuming less than 180 units monthly, and the first industrial sub‑category are also exempt from increases. Additional costs linked to coal supply issues will not be passed on to consumers.

As such, the PUCSL has invited written comments and proposals on the estimate until May 6, 2026. 

An oral consultation session will be held on the same day at the Bandaranaike International Conference Hall in Colombo. 

Submissions can be made via post, email, WhatsApp, or fax, with prior registration required for oral presentations.

The Commission further said all feedback will be considered before announcing the final decision on electricity tariffs on May 9, 2026. (Newswire)

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) says that a public consultation will be held today (02 July) to identify the challenges faced by renewable energy developers in the country.

According to the Commission, opinions from stakeholders will be collected verbally during the event held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.

It is noted that this action has been taken under the authority vested by Section 17 of the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission Act No. 35 of 2002.

The Artificial Intelligence Task Force in Sri Lanka has crafted a ‘white paper’ for public consultation to guide the development of a comprehensive strategy for AI integration in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Technology said.
