In a concerning incident, explicit and inappropriate language was seen on the official website of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Public Security on Thursday.

A screenshot circulating online shows a search result listing vulgar and offensive content under a section meant to display ministerial information regarding the Ministry Secretary.

The presence of such language has raised suspicions that the website may have been hacked or tampered with by external parties. 

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the matter, but cybersecurity experts stress the urgent need for investigation and prompt rectification. (Newswire)

Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala has revealed about an individual who had deceived him and his ministry staff, eventually fleeing with 17 new passports. 

During an interview with local media, Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala said that the incident had occurred during his first official visit to his office at the ministry recently.

Deputy Minister Watagala said as he entered the ministry premises, an individual he assumed was a ministry staff had taken the lead to escort him to various departments of the ministry. 

He said, at the time, he assumed he was a ministry official, while the ministry staff had been informed by the man that he had been sent from the Presidential Secretariat to coordinate the Deputy Minister’s visit. 

“A tea party had been organised to mark the occasion, and the man was actively involved in arranging it. He also escorted me to visit various sections of the ministry, including areas related to passport preparation, claiming that no minister had ever toured those sections before,” Deputy Minister Watagala said.

The Deputy Minister said only the following day he had been informed by his team that this person had instructed ministry staff to provide voice clips to the media praising him as a good person and an excellent deputy minister, advising that this man was not suitable to be a staff member. 

Inquiries from Ministry officials had proven that the man was an outsider, with Deputy Minister Watagala saying it was later found that his team had removed the man from the premises due to his actions. 

The Deputy Minister of Public Security further said that, however, by then the man had left the ministry with 17 new passports, after claiming that the Deputy Minister had ordered the collection. 

Stating that the individual has been identified as Nishantha, Deputy Minister Watagala said he has instructed the Police to immediately apprehend the man. (Newswire)

Doctor Shafi Sihabdeen of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital today filed a complaint with the Ministry of Public Security over his arrest and detention in 2019.

Speaking to the media today, Dr. Sihabdeen said that he faced the ordeal due to false allegations made against him for political propaganda and that he has filed a complaint to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. 

Dr. Sihabdeen further said that he filed a complaint against all who had made false allegations against him, leading to his detention. 

“I was arrested without a complaint against me. A complaint was made against me to the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) ruining my career. Another complaint was made to the Bribery Commission concerning my assets. My family and I were brought to a situation of being unable to face society,” he said. 

Stating that he and his wife had filed multiple complaints during his five-year trial, but none had been addressed, Dr. Sihabdeen said the complaint filed today was to ensure that those responsible for his ordeal are brought before the law. 

Doctor Shafi Sihabdeen filed the complaint after the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court yesterday acquitted him of all charges linked to his arrest and detention in 2019, as the complainants had failed to prove their accusations.

In 2019, Dr. Sihabdeen was sent on compulsory leave after being accused of performing illegal sterilization operations at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.

He was arrested over allegations of the alleged sterilization of women without their consent. Dr. Sihabdeen was also accused of having amassed wealth in an illegal manner and maintaining links with a terrorist organization. 

He was later released on bail by the Kurunegala Chief Magistrate after the Criminal Investigation Department informed the Court that investigations carried out had not proven any of the allegations. (Newswire)

Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, former Senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne has engaged in a discussion with the Police Department on the progress of various investigations conducted into fraud, crimes, and other major offences. 

At the discussion at the Police Headquarters yesterday, attention was focused on probes currently underway, those that have been temporarily halted, if such investigations were halted due to political reasons, delayed probes, and investigations yet to be commenced. 

In a statement, Sri Lanka Police said discussions were also held on whether some cases had been influenced and if not, the cause for delays regarding its progress. 

Alongside the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, senior officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and other senior officials of the Police Department participated in the discussion. (Newswire)
