The Director General of the Department of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanna says the current rainy weather will ease by tomorrow afternoon (04).

Addressing a special media briefing held today, Ajith Wijemanna said that the rainy weather will continue in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya Districts, and the Sabaragamuwa Province tonight and tomorrow morning. 

However, the rainy weather will ease after tomorrow afternoon, he said. 

The Director General of the Met Department further said that, however, a typhoon over the Pacific Ocean south of Japan is expected to influence Sri Lanka from around August 06.

The prevailing showery condition over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka is expected to continue, according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today (28).

Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm are likely in some places in the Galle, Matara, Kaluthara and Rathnapura districts.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 1.00 pm.

Fairly strong winds about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

An increase in rainfall is expected over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka during the next few days, as the Southwest Monsoon is gradually establishing across the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.
