The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 08.30 am today (14) has been reported in the Puttalam District, recording 256.2 mm, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

The Met Department has further issued an advisory for heavy rain in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts today.

Per the advisory, effective until 08.30 am tomorrow (15), red alerts have been issued to 11 districts and amber alerts to 14 districts. 

Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts during this period. 

The Met Department states that the low-pressure area, located in the northeast of Sri Lanka, persists, but is expected to move away from Sri Lanka and gradually weaken in the next 36 hours. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology says the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today has been reported in the Pulliyam Pokkunai area in Kilinochchi, recording 274 mm of rain.

The next highest rainfall has been recorded in the Mannar District, with 210 mm of rain in Portkerny and 208 mm of rain in the Marichchukaddi areas.

The highest rainfall reported in the last 24 hours as of 06.00 AM today has been recorded in the Nillambe area in the Kandy District, recording 431.2 mm of rain.

According to the Disaster Management Centre, over 250 mm of rain has been recorded in the Dotheloya Estate area in Kegalle (277.8), Pokkanai in Kilinochchi (274), and the Manikdhiwela area in Kandy (266.2).

Between 200 mm- 250 mm of rainfall has been recorded in some areas of the Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Gampaha, and Kurunegala Districts.

The Department of Irrigation reports that the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 08.30 am today has been reported in the Weraganthota area, recording 279.6 mm of rainfall. 

The Department has issued a flood warning to the area due to a rise in the water level of the Mahaweli River.

Over 200 mm of rain has also been recorded in the Manampitiya, Thaldena, Yaka Wewa, and Thanthrimale areas during this period.

Over 100 mm of rainfall has been reported in the Holombuwa, Deraniyagala, Thanamalwila, Wellawaya, Nakkala, Siyambalanduwa, Padiyathalawa, Peradeniya, Nawalapitiya, Horowpathana, Galgamuwa, and Giriulla areas. 

Minor and major flood warnings have been issued to several areas due to a rise in the water levels of several rivers in Sri Lanka.
