A mahout and his assistant have died after being attacked by an elephant brought for the 78th Poson procession at the Sri Ubhayatilakārāma Temple in Rakwana, it was reported.

The Police said two elephants had been tied near the temple following the procession yesterday. 

On Monday morning, the mahout’s assistant led one of the elephants to the Rakwana River to provide water, when the animal suddenly turned aggressive and fatally attacked him.

Hearing the cries, the mahout rushed to the scene but was also attacked by the elephant and died on the spot.

After the incident, the elephant is reported to have run into a nearby paddy field. 

It is reported that Wildlife officers have since arrived at the location and are taking steps to tranquilize and capture the animal. (Newswire)

The Police have sought public assistance to arrest a woman wanted over the robbery of gold jewellery and other items worth Rs. 364,000 in the Rakwana area.

According to the Police, a resident of Godakawela in Rakwana had filed a complaint with the Police in August, alleging that several items, including jewellery, had been stolen from her house.

Police investigations have found that a woman who had been temporarily residing at the house had stolen the items. 

The suspect is reported to have fled the area.

The Sri Lankan Police has sought the assistance of the public to apprehend two wanted suspects.

The Police have sought public help to arrest a suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a woman in Mathugama. 

According to the Police, the suspect had slit the throat of the woman in the Dholahena Watte area of Mathugama in April this year. 

The Police further said that the suspect, a 41-year-old resident of Mathugama, has fled the area.

Meanwhile, the Police have also sought the help of the public to arrest a woman who had defrauded Rs. 03 million under the pretext of providing jobs overseas.

The Rakwana Police had launched a probe into the incident based on complaints filed by five women.

As the 41-year-old woman has fled her area of residence and is in hiding, the Police have sought public assistance to arrest her.
