Daryl Mitchell has become the first player from New Zealand since Glenn Turner in 1979 to top the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings after his match-winning century against the West Indies in their series opener in Christchurch.

The 34-year-old’s 118-ball knock of 119 that won him the Player of the Match award, has helped him overtake Ibrahim Zadran of Afghanistan and edge past Rohit Sharma of India by just one rating point. Rohit’s first reign at the top lasted only 22 days.

While Turner was the last New Zealand player at the top of the ODI batting rankings 46 years ago, players like Nathan Astle, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson have reached as high as number three in the table.

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam, who struck an unbeaten 102 in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi last week, has moved up one slot to sixth position, while Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman have gained five places each to reach 22nd and 26th positions, respectively, after slamming two half-centuries each against Sri Lanka.

Abrar Ahmed in top 10 for the first time:

The ODI bowling rankings see Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed attain a career-best ninth position, gaining 11 slots after a three-wicket haul in the second ODI against Sri Lanka. Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf has moved up five places to 23rd while the West Indies’ Jayden Seales (up three places to 20th) and Roston Chase (up 12 places to 46th) have also advanced.

Bavuma, Yadav attain career bests:

In the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has reached a career-best fifth position among batters after an unbeaten 55 in the second innings of the low-scoring Kolkata Test that his team won by 30 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-match ICC World Test Championship series.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer’s hauls of four for 30 and four for 21 at the Eden Gardens have lifted him 20 slots to a career-best 24th position while India spinners Kuldeep Yadav (up two places to a career-best 13th position) and Ravindra Jadeja (up four places to 15th) have also moved up the bowling list.

Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto (up four places to 34th) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy (up 19 places to 74th) prosper after their centuries in an innings victory over Ireland in Sylhet. Ireland’s Paul Stirling has progressed from 96th to 80th position.

In the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings, New Zealander Tim Robinson’s knock of 45 in the final match against the West Indies has helped him move up eight places to a career-best 15th position and seam bowler Jacob Duffy has inched up from third to second position. Mitchell Santner (up five places to 18th) and Mohammad Nawaz (up four places to 27th) are among others to progress. (ICC)

Sri Lanka opener Chamari Athapaththu has made notable progress in the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings after some fine performances over the past week.

According to the ICC, Athapaththu’s match-winning knock of 102 against Scotland in the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier has helped the captain move up two places to seventh position among batters, just one off her career-best sixth position attained in April this year.

Athapaththu, currently ranked number one in the ODI batting rankings, has also moved up to fifth among all-rounders in the T20I rankings.

In the latest weekly update, Sri Lanka’s Nilakshi de Silva has moved up two places to 48th in the batting rankings, while Inoshi Fernando moved up five places to 19th and Udeshika Prabhodhani moved up five places to 30th.

England bowler Sarah Glenn’s haul of four for 12 and Lauren Bell’s figures of three for 22 in the first of their three-match series against Pakistan in Birmingham saw them move up to fourth and seventh positions respectively, Bell moving past 700 rating points for the first time in her career.

England’s 53-run win in Birmingham also resulted in several other gains for the home team’s players. Captain Heather Knight, whose knock of 49 led to a remarkable recovery from 11 for four, has advanced four places to 18th position.

Player of the Match Amy Jones, who smashed 37 off 27 balls at her home ground in her 100th T20I appearance, has moved up three places to 26th.

In the latest weekly update that also considers performances in the last T20I of the five-match bilateral series in Bangladesh that India won 5-0, India’s left-arm spinner Radha Yadav has moved up seven places to 23rd position after her three-wicket haul, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur (up three places to 13th), Richa Ghosh (up two places to 23rd) and Dayalan Hemlatha (up 298 places to 78th) are among others to progress.

Papua New Guinea’s Tanya Ruma (up three places to joint-27th), Zimbabwe’s Modester Mupachikwa (up two places to 41st) and Sri Lanka’s Nilakshi de Silva (up two places to 48th) are among others to move up the batting rankings while Sri Lanka’s Inoshi Fernando (up five places to 19th), Bangladesh’s Marufa Akter (up two places to 27th) and Sri Lanka’s Udeshika Prabhodhani (up five places to 30th) have progressed in the bowling rankings. Sri Lanka is ranked 7th in both the Men’s Test and One Day International formats with 83 and 93 rating points, respectively.

According to the ICC, Sri Lanka is ranked 08th in the Twenty-20 format with 232 rating points.

Australia, who defeated India in the ICC World Test Championship final at The Oval last year, have reclaimed No. 1 position in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings following the annual update that drops results from the 2020-21 season and reflects all series completed since May 2021.

Australia now lead the table with 124 rating points, but India, who ceded top position to them, are just four points behind and 15 points clear of third-placed England. South Africa are the fourth team above the 100-point mark with 103 points.

The order of teams ranked from third to ninth remains the same. Only nine teams are now ranked as Afghanistan and Ireland have yet to play sufficient Tests while Zimbabwe too are out as they have played only three Tests over the past three years.

India, however, remain atop the ODI and T20I rankings after the annual updates, that weight matches completed prior to May 2023 at 50 per cent and subsequent matches at 100 per cent.

There are no changes in the top 10 but Ireland have overtaken Zimbabwe to 11th position. Third-placed South Africa have closed the gap with Australia from eight to four points while Sri Lanka are just two points behind fifth-placed England.

The T20I rankings see Australia move ahead of England to second place but they are seven points adrift of India, who lead with 264 rating points.

South Africa are just two points behind England after leapfrogging two places from the sixth position that they had before the update.

India have overtaken Australia to regain No.1 position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings following the annual update that drops results from the 2019-20 season and reflects all series completed since May 2020.

India’s rating points have moved up from 119 to 121 as their 2-0 defeat to New Zealand in March 2020 no longer figures in the rankings, which assesses series completed prior to May 2022 at 50 per cent and subsequent series at 100 per cent. India were last at the top for a month in December 2021.

Australia have slipped from 122 to 116 rating points as their home series wins over Pakistan (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0) in 2019-20 no longer figure in the rankings, while their 4-0 win over England in 2021-22 has its weighting halved to 50 per cent.

Australia, who take on India in the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023 at The Oval from 7 June, were the top-ranked Test side since January 2022. They grabbed the position with the 4-0 series win over England that helped them overtake New Zealand.

England remain in third position but the gap between them and the second placed side is reduced from 13 to two rating points owing to some consistent performances in recent months as well as reduced weightage of their 4-0 Ashes defeat and a 1-0 defeat in the West Indies.

The other rankings too remain unchanged though 10th-placed Zimbabwe have gained five rating points. Afghanistan and Ireland have yet to play enough Tests to earn a place in the rankings table.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, India have consolidated their position at the top, increasing their lead over second-placed England from six to eight points. New Zealand have overtaken Pakistan and South Africa to third position.

The biggest ratings jumps are by Hong Kong (up three places to 18th) and USA (up three places to 22nd).

Oman and Papua New Guinea are down two places each to 20th and 21st, respectively, while Singapore have slipped six places to 36th.

In all, 84 countries are now ranked, having played the minimum requirement of six T20I matches over the past three years.

Turkey drop off the table, having fallen below the threshold of six matches, while five countries – Brazil, Chile, Iran, Mexico and Peru – have not played at all since May 2020 and so lose their rating.

The annual update to the ODI team rankings will be carried out on 10 May after the ongoing Pakistan-New Zealand series. (ICC)
