The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has issued an urgent warning to the public after a training aircraft faced serious danger from kite strings near Ratmalana Airport today.

A Y‑12 aircraft engaged in training flights was forced to land after kite strings became entangled in its systems. 

According to SLAF, subsequent inspection revealed large amounts of string caught in the left wheel, left engine area, and several other parts, highlighting the severe risk posed to aviation safety.

Issuing a statement, SLAF stressed that kite flying near airports and runways is a direct obstruction to aircraft operations and has been identified globally as a cause of aviation accidents.

In Sri Lanka, the risk has escalated around runways in Katunayake, Ratmalana, Hingurakgoda, China Bay, Anuradhapura, Palali, Katukurunda, Koggala, Vavuniya, Weerawila, and Mattala.

SLAF warned that if kite strings or fragments enter an aircraft’s engine or operating systems, the entire aircraft could face catastrophic failure, with high potential for loss of life and property.

To ensure aviation safety and protect passenger lives, residents living near airports and runways have been strongly urged to refrain from flying kites in such zones. (Newswire)

Workers unearthed a cache of ammunition believed to date back to World War II at The School for the Deaf in Ratmalana on Monday (12), it was reported.

According to News First, the Police said the cache of ammunition was found during routine clearing of garbage on the school premises.

The ammunition, suspected to be rounds used in machine guns, was immediately secured by authorities.

The Police added that the cache of ammunition will be handed over to the Government Analyst’s Department for detailed examination and verification. (Newswire)

Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake was a witness to a minor accident that occurred at the Railway Workshops Complex at Ratmalana during an inspection tour today. 

A minor explosion occurred during ongoing work on a railway compartment, with workers scrambling to put out a fire.

Inquiring about the requirements of the workers, Minister Rathnayake questioned if they were granted proper safety equipment. 

“No safety boots? Or have you been given and not worn it due to laziness? Or have you not been granted any such gear at all?” he inquired. 

While speaking with the minister, employees informed him that they have not been given any protective gear. (Newswire)

Two persons have been injured in a shooting incident reported at the Ratmalana Railway Yard early this morning.

The Police said a group of five persons had entered the yard to steal goods, when they had been spotted by security officials on duty.

The suspects had assaulted and injured one security official, after which another security official opened fire at them.

One suspect had been injured in the shooting, while the other suspects had fled the area.

The injured security official and suspect have been admitted to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

A 52-year-old man has been murdered at his residence in Ratmalana early this morning. 

Police said the man, a resident of Borupana Road in Ratmalana, had been stabbed to death. 

Investigations have revealed that he had been stabbed with a sharp object by two unidentified men while sleeping in his bedroom.

The suspects involved in the murder are yet to be identified, while the Mount Lavinia Police has launched a probe into the incident. (Newswire)

Six suspects, including a man, have been arrested following raids conducted on two brothels in the Ratmalana area that had been operated under the guise of Ayurvedic Spas. 

The Police stated that the raids were conducted by officers of the Mount Lavinia Crimes Investigation Division yesterday.

Three women were arrested from one brothel, while a man and two women were arrested from the other.

The suspects aged between 23 and 49 years will be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court today. (NewsWire)

Four suspects have been arrested following a raid conducted on a brothel operated under the guise of an Ayurvedic Spa in Ratmalana.

The Police stated that the raid was conducted last evening by the Mount Lavinia Crimes Investigations Unit based on a tip-off.

The four suspects include a male manager of the brothel and three women who had aided its services.

The suspects are a 40-year-old man from Welimada, and three women aged 19,  20, and 26 years who are residents of Kalutara and Polpitihigama.

Eight suspects have been arrested following a raid conducted on a brothel operated under the guise of an Ayurvedic Spa in Ratmalana. 

The Police stated that the brothel was raided yesterday by officers attached to the Mount Lavinia Division Crimes Investigation Unit based on a tip-off.

The suspects, 08 women, included the suspected manager of the brothel and the women who had aided its services. 

The arrested group includes women aged between 24 – 53 years and residents of Panadura, Padaviya, Narampanawa, Parantha, Ketabulawa, Thambuththegama, Wanathawilluwa, and Elpitiya.

An Air Force Sergeant has been arrested over a missing firearm and ammunition from the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) base in Ratmalana.

The Mount Lavinia Police stated that a T-56 weapon and 120 rounds of ammunition in four magazines were reported missing from the SLAF base on Monday (20).

The Police further stated that the weapon and ammunition had been buried and were recovered from a vegetable plot in Anguruwatota, Panadura.

Investigations had revealed that the T-56 weapon and 120 rounds of ammunition in four magazines had been stolen from the armoury of the SLAF at the Ratmalana Base on Monday.
