While water levels in the island’s main reservoirs in the wet zone remain stable, those in the dry zone are rapidly declining, with water storage across Sri Lanka’s 74 major reservoirs dropping to just 36% of capacity, Irrigation Director Suriya Bandara warned.

Addressing the media, he said that in districts such as Hambantota, Batticaloa, Monaragala, Mannar and Trincomalee, water levels in some reservoirs have already dropped below 30% capacity. 

According to the Director, the situation has worsened this year due to the El Niño climatic anomaly, intensifying the usual August dry season. Excessive heat has accelerated evaporation, further reducing available water.

As demand rises, resources are shrinking. Suriya Bandara cautioned that while drinking water supplies remain unaffected, allocations for cultivation have already been restricted in some areas. 

He stressed that in severely affected regions, priority must be given to drinking water and environmental needs, making agricultural releases increasingly difficult.

He emphasized that the only way to face this challenge is to use water sparingly and live in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The Director also warned of heightened risks of forest fires, which could spread rapidly under current hot and dry conditions.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Irrigation has announced that boundaries of 23 major tanks will be marked and cleared this year under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ program, aimed at protecting reservoirs and promoting sustainable development.

The initiative began recently in the North Central Province with boundary marking at the Nuwara Wewa in Anuradhapura. 

Officials confirmed that the Southern Province program will commence this week, with the Tissamaharama tank scheduled for August 29 and the Ridiyagama tank on August 30, both starting at 9.00 a.m.

The Irrigation Department said tanks are selected based on priority, and the program is being carried out with technical assistance from the Department of Survey. The boundaries will be physically marked on the ground to clearly identify and preserve the protected areas of each reservoir.

Authorities added that the marked zones will be conserved to ensure long-term water sustainability. In addition, reforestation programs involving all stakeholders are planned around the identified areas to strengthen ecological protection. (Newswire)
